Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Oct. 9, 2019

Volleyball

The Galesburg Silver Streaks lost to Moline in straight sets, 25-18, 25-22. Lauren Livingston had five kills and nine digs. Those totals led the Streaks in those categories. Maddie Carlson had five assists. Galesburg ends their Western Big Six Conference schedule with a record of (4-10) and are now (9-14) overall.

First place was on the line in the Three Rivers Conference’s West Division as the Orion Chargers hosted Fulton. Orion was seeking revenge for their only loss of the season. And retribution is what they got as the Chargers beat the Steamers 25-20, 25-19. Sarah Jacobsen led all players with 17 kills. She also had nine digs and three blocks. Fellow Charger, Mackenzie Grafton led in digs with 14. Grafton also accrued eight kills and two blocks. Faith Catour led Orion with 17 assists. Both Orion and Fulton are now (5-1) in the West Division. The Chargers are now (23-1) overall.

Other high school volleyball finals include…. Abingdon-Avon losing to Havana 25-17, 25-14. West Prairie beat Knoxville 25-18, 25-14. Illini West defeated BPC 25-8, 25-9. IW improves to (20-4) overall and (4-0) in the Prairieland Conference’s South Division. they lead Lewistown by one game. Lewistown beat South Fulton last night 25-16, 25-18. Finally, in non-conference play, Elmwood beat ROWVA 25-11, 25-12. Elmwood leads the Prairieland North Divison with a record of (4-0). That’s a half game better than Brimfield’s (4-1) mark.

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan junior high football team traveled to Sherrard to take on the Tigers Tuesday night. The Titans started out sluggish and fell behind 14-0. In the second quarter, Tyler Finnicum found Caleb Miller on a slant route for a 43 yard score to spark the Titan offense. Another scoring drive was capped off by a Rhett Willet touchdown to make it 14-14 at the half. The second half was all Sherrard, bringing the final score to 26-14 in favor of Sherrard.

In junior high girls basketball, the ICS Trojans swept a pair of road games in Annawan. The ICS 7th grade won 34-20. Emrick Huston, Ady Schisler, & Addison Gillen all had 8 points for ICS. The ICS 8th grade beat the Bravettes 41-38. Reece Bertelsen was leading scorer with 21 points for the Trojans.

Galesburg runners claimed both individual titles and the junior high boys and girls cross country teams each finished third at a quad meet at Canton on Tuesday night. Farmington won the boys division and Canton captured the girls meet. Lily Furrow won her first meet of the season and her career, crossing the finish line of the two-mile course at Big Creek Park in 14:18, and Plamedi Nseka cruised to victory in a course-record time of 12:02. It marked the first time in 5 years that Galesburg has taken dual individual honors at the same cross country meet. The junior high harriers travel to Sterling on Saturday for the IESA Sectional Meet with team and individual qualifications for the state championships on the line.

JCC’s Monmouth Resource Center Now Open

Jamieson Community Center’s Food Pantry and Thrift Store are now open at the Monmouth Resource Center, located at 1120 South Main Street in Monmouth, shares Executive Director Nancy Mowen: “We
