Monmouth College Homecoming Set for October 18-20

More than 400 guests are expected to help celebrate Monmouth College’s 2019 Homecoming weekend, Oct. 18-20. Events will include award ceremonies, reunions, a parade, a football game and other home Fighting Scots events, pre-game gatherings and a Sunday afternoon concert.

Oct. 18 events

The induction of former Monmouth College Board of Trustees chairman William Goldsborough ’65 and trustee emerita Karen Barrett Chism ’65 into the Hall of Achievement – the highest honor the College bestows upon its graduates – will be part of the Alumni Impact Awards ceremony, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in Mellinger Commons in the Center for Science and Business.

Others to be honored at the Alumni Impact Awards ceremony are: agribusiness CEO Robert Riley ’70, Distinguished Alumnus; Emeritus Professor of History William Urban, Distinguished Service; Monmouth Assistant Director of Career Development and Internship Coordinator Jenny Erickson Sanberg ’10, Young Alumnus; and the Tanney family, Family of the Year. Communication studies professor Trudi Peterson will be presented with the Hatch Academic Excellence Award for Distinguished Teaching.

At 3 p.m. in the Everett Gallery in Hewes Library, a reception will be held for the four alumni artists featured in the “Monmouth to M.F.A.” exhibit: Alexandra Dupont ’16Lily Guillen ’18Azul Nogueron ’17 and Brennan Probst ’12. They will give a gallery talk at 3:30 p.m.

Also in the library at 3:30 p.m., members of the Monmouth Intercultural Network of Alumni will participate in a panel discussion with students, sharing how their Monmouth experience informed their careers. The panel will be held on the lower level of the library in the Barnes Electronic Classroom.

The day’s other events include “Hoptimistic Thoughts” at 4 p.m. in the Nutrition Lab on the second floor of the Center for Science and Business. Chemistry professor Brad Sturgeon and Steve Murmann ’80 will speak about beer-making and their local “pico” brewery, DeNovo Beverage.

The Homecoming spirit shout will begin at 8 p.m. at April Zorn Memorial Stadium. The traditional celebration, which will feature competition by student organizations and the introduction of Homecoming royalty, will conclude with a fireworks display.

Oct. 19 events

The Oct. 19 events begin at 8:30 a.m. when four Fighting Scots athletic greats will be inducted into the M Club Hall of Fame. The ceremony for football stars Dante Daniels ’08 and Mitch Tanney ’06, volleyball record-holder Jaime Jones Goin ’02 and national rebound leader Ashley Yeast Tanney ’08 will be held on the main concourse of the Huff Athletic Center.

At 9:30 a.m., the fifth-annual Greek Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held in Mellinger Commons. Slated to receive acceptance into the Hall of Fame are Dwayne Hughes ’87Amy Stark Spong ’99 and the late Richard “Doc” Kieft.

Kieft, a longtime chemistry professor at the College, will be remembered on the 10th anniversary of his death at an alumni mixer from 6-9 p.m. at the American Legion, 1110 N. 11th St. All alumni and friends are welcome to celebrate with a disc jockey, hear stories and toast “Doc.”

The Homecoming parade on East Broadway between Sixth Street and Ninth Street will begin at 11 a.m. Sponsored by the Association for Student Activity Programming, it will include the Monmouth College Pipe Band and Fighting Scots Marching Band. Last year’s Homecoming king and queen will also ride in the parade, as will the 2019 Homecoming court, alumni award recipients and the 35-, 20- and five-year reunion classes.

At 11:30 a.m., Monmouth’s Great Lectures Series continues in the Barnes Electronic Classroom. Art professor Janis Wunderlich will deliver a talk titled “Following the Fingerprint of Human Innovation Through the Analysis of Ancient Ceramics.”

Also at 11:30 a.m., gatherings will be held by three departments: educational studies and communication studies/public relations, both in Wallace Hall; and theatre/Crimson Masque in Wells Theater.

A cookout with the faculty will be held from noon-2 p.m. on the east hilltop overlooking April Zorn Memorial Stadium, and an alumni tailgate will be held from noon-7 p.m. in Pattee Hall parking lot. The Homecoming football game against Illinois College will kick off at a special start time of 2 p.m.

Monmouth’s soccer teams will be in action at Peacock Memorial Athletic Park over the weekend, hosting Lake Forest College on Oct. 19 and Lawrence University on Oct. 20. The women will kick off at 11 a.m. both days, with the men’s games to follow at 1:30 p.m. The men’s and women’s swimming teams will open their season Oct. 19 with a triangular meet in Pepper Natatorium at 1 p.m.

Reunions will be held throughout the weekend for the classes of 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014.

Oct. 20 event

Previously scheduled for Oct. 19, a Homecoming choral concert will be performed in Dahl Chapel and Auditorium at 2 p.m. Oct. 20, featuring the Chorale, the Chamber Choir and the Concert Choir.
