Monmouth broke free for 20, second half points on the way to a 27-14 win at Cornell, the Scots’ fourth straight win.

The Rams took a 7-0 lead with a TD pass early in the second quarter before the Scots rolled off 27 unanswered points. Monmouth then marched 75 yards on seven plays following Cornell’s score as Walker Dycus hit Jake Uryasz for a 48-yard touchdown pass to open the gates.

Tied at 7-7 entering the third quarter, Drake Dietrich’s interception at the Scots’ 38 set up a 51-yard Monmouth drive culminated by a 28-yard Joey Biel field goal to give the Scots a 10-7 lead. Donny Friedel made it 17-7 on the Rams’ ensuing possession, scooping up a Cornell fumble and racing nine yards to the endzone, the first of two scores aided by fumble recoveries.

Nursing a 10-point lead with 10:49 left in the third period, Carter Lewis recovered the loose ball when Brad Buchner forced another Ram’s fumble at the Rams’ 34. Monmouth moved the ball to the Cornell nine before the drive stalled and Biel added his second field goal of the day for a 20-7 lead. Terrence Best’s three-yard TD run with 3:24 left in the game sealed the deal as the Scots surrendered a score in the final minute of play.

The Rams outgained the Scots 322-280 as the majority Monmouth’s drives began on a short field. Clark Gaden led the team in tackles for the second straight week, making a dozen stops. Uryasz led the offense with 135 receiving yards.

Monmouth travels to the University of Chicago for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Nov. 2 in a meeting of the top two teams in the Midwest Conference’s South division.
