Mrs. Edith D. “Peg” Swigart, 84, of Galesburg died at 3:24 p.m., Thursday, November 21, 2019 at Heartland Health Care Center.

Peg was born July 12, 1935, in Galesburg, to Mr. George W. and Dorothy E. (Heurlin) Johnson. She married Jack Swigart on July 17, 1971; he preceded her in death May 17, 2008.

She is survived by her sisters, Anita Carlton of Galesburg and Anne Liniger of Monmouth; two nieces, Pam (Michael) Pettyjohn of Tampa, Florida and Lisa (Walter) Pumpfrey of Maquon, Illinois; and two nephews, David L. Carlton of Galesburg and Douglas (Jessica) Liniger of Springfield, Illinois.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Peg was raised and educated in Galesburg. While attending Galesburg High School, Peg was on the swim team and the synchronized swimming group; she also played first chair trumpet her senior year. Peg graduated from Galesburg High School in 1953 and enlisted in the United States Air Force for four years. It was while serving in the Air Force that she became acquainted with computers. Upon returning home, Peg attended Browns Business College. She moved to Kansas City to work for Sunshine Biscuit as a computer programmer. She and Jack then returned home and she worked at Caterpillar as a computer programmer before retiring and moving to Oquawka with her husband. Peg was a member of Oquawka United Methodist Church. She enjoyed bowling, playing baseball, and golfing and would play Taps at the funeral services for her fellow veterans.

Cremation has been accorded. A memorial service at Oquawka United Methodist Church will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to Oquawka United Methodist Church. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel is assisting the family with final arrangements. Online condolences may be given at www.h-p-w.com.
