Knox Men’s Soccer Clinches MWC Title

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa— The Prairie Fire men’s soccer team defeated Cornell 2-1 on Sunday afternoon to clinch the regular season Midwest Conference title.

Alessandro Benelli put Knox on the board first when he found the back of the net in the 23rd minute.

Cornell scored the equalizer in the 33rd minute and the game went into halftime tied 1-1.

Benelli scored his second goal of the game less than three minutes into the second half and the Prairie Fire held on for the victory.

Knox outshot the Rams 21-6 on the day, including a 12-1 advantage in shots on goal.

“We are excited to be hosting the conference tournament,” said head coach Brian O’Connor. “We look forward to practicing at home all week.”

The Prairie Fire look forward to hosting the Midwest Conference tournament when they play Monmouth this Friday at 2:00 p.m.
