Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Nov. 7, 2019

Volleyball

The Orion Charger volleyball team is the lone area school left in the IHSA postseason playoffs after defeating El Paso-Gridley 27-25, 25-14 in the sectional championship in Spring Valley last night. The Chargers are now (37-1) after knocking off EP-G. Sarah Jacobsen smashed ten kills and eight digs for the winners. Mackenzie Grafton eight kills, six digs and three aces. Faith Catour led Orion in assists with 13 and Kati Kratzburg led in digs with 16. The Chargers will play for a Class 2A super-sectional plaque tomorrow night in Farmington at 7:00. Their opponent will be Decatur St. Teresa. St. Teresa beat Downs Tri-Valley 25-11, 25-16 in the Pleasant Plains 2A sectional championship. Decatur will bring a record of (34-5) into the super-sectional matchup.

Our listening area had two more team left in class 1A heading into last night’s contests. The Elmwood Trojans and Lewistown Indians each played in sectional championship matches. They were both defeated in straight sets. Elmwood lost to powerful Illini Bluffs 25-12, 25-16 in the Kewanee Wethersfield sectional. The Trojans were led by Emily Stratton’s three kills, Isabella Guppy’s 11 digs and Alexia Herman’s seven assists. They end their season at (27-5). Lewistown lost to Athens 25-23, 25-19 in the Athens sectional final. Lewistown, who fall to (30-9), were led by Carli Heffren’s 11 kills and four blocks. Sydney Shaeffer hustled her way to nine digs and Carmyn Baldwin handed out 20 assists. Illini Bluffs is now (38-1) overall and will play (30-4-1) Milford in the Midland super-sectional tomorrow night in Varna.

Junior High

In junior high girls basketball last night, the Monmouth-Roseville 7th grade Lady Titans lost to Knoxville 36-19. Leading scorers for the Titans were Mia Reynolds with 11 points and Milley Sage with 5 points. The Monmouth-Roseville 7th grade record is now 12-4. The 8th Grade Lady Titans improved to 13-5 overall on the season after beating the Knoxville 31-23. Leading scorers for the Titans were Meyah Hunter with 8pts and Ashya Bates with 5pts. Monmouth-Roseville’s Prairieland Conference record is 6-2.
