The Knox-Galesburg Symphony Announces Second Masterworks Concert of the Season: Winds of Change

Share

The Knox-Galesburg Symphony is thrilled to announce that our second Masterworks performance, “Winds of Change,” is coming to the Orpheum Theatre on November 23rd at 7:30 pm. Aptly named during a season of many changes for the KGS, this concert features both classical and contemporary music spanning many genres and centuries. The winds section kicks off the performance with Mozart’s 12th serenade in C minor. Wind instruments are perfectly suited to capture the haunting melodies of this piece. This, combined with the cheerful upbeat moments, makes for an extremely interesting and varied listening experience.

Following this classic, the KGS jumps several centuries ahead and performs a cinematic and utterly captivating piece by film composer Anže Rozman, a colleague of Hans Zimmer and personal friend of our conductor Vlad Vizireanu. Primarily a composer for film and media, you may have already heard Rozman’s music on The Simpsons, or any of several Netflix, PBS, BBC, and CBS shows that he has composed for. The piece, entitled “Phoenix,” will heavily feature our principal flutist Jeiran Hasan as a soloist. “Phoenix” has never before been performed in the States, so the KGS is honored to be the ones bringing you its American debut!

“Winds of Change” ends with the full force of the symphony, playing Brahms’ Variations on St. Anthony Chorale. While the theme was written in the 1700’s, Brahms’ variations were written in the late 1800’s and highlight the vast musical changes that occurred between these centuries. This work was musically ahead of its time, and there are several moments that sound incredibly familiar… as if you recognize it from a movie or TV show that you can’t quite remember the name of. This is explained by how influential Brahms has been to film composers over the years. Because this piece will immediately follow the contemporary work of a film composer, you’ll be able to hear for yourself how the influence of Classical and Romantic composers is alive and well to this day!

Tickets start at $20 for adults and are just $5 for students and children. Knox students get in for free with ID. Tickets are available for purchase at the Orpheum Theatre box office, at www.kgsymphony.org, or over the phone at (309)341-7268. We hope to see you there for this one-of-a-kind performance!
