A single vehicle fatal crash occurred at 1 p.m. on Sunday, December 22nd in Hancock County on IL-94 a half mile north of County Road 2800 North. A 2002 Silver Mercury Cougar, driven by 19 year old Jacob Huls of Carthage, IL, was heading northbound on IL-94 when a vehicle in front of him slowed down to avoid a collision with a vehicle pulling out of a driveway. Huls swerved to the left to avoid striking the vehicle and left the roadway striking the ditch on the west side of IL-94, causing the vehicle to roll over into a field. Huls and 20 year old Cory Squier of LaHarpe, IL were both ejected from the vehicle. Huls was pronounced dead at the scene. Squier was transported to Great River Medical Center in West Burlington Iowa with non-life threatening injuries.
Charges include unlawful possession of alcohol by a minor, illegal transportation of alcohol, and failure to wear a seatbelt.
