Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Dec. 12th, 2019

Basketball

The United Red Storm boys and girls varsity basketball teams both earned wins on Tuesday night and were right back on the floor last night in the always tough, back-to-back nights. The Red Storm boys got a nice comeback win over St. Joseph’s College High School of Australia on Tuesday but fell to the Bushnell-Prairie City Spartans 63-59 in Bushnell last night. The Red Storm fall to (6-3) on the season and were led in scoring by Declan Flynn’s 27 points. Evan Wynne also scored 19 of the Red Storm total.

Also in boys basketball last night, the Mercer County Golden Eagles got their first win of the season, beating Riverdale 60-55.

In high school girls basketball, the United Red Storm already equaled their win total of all last season with a home win over Rushville-Industry on Tuesday night. Like the Red Storm boys, the girls were also on the road, albeit at ROWVA/Williamsfield at ROWVA High School in Oneida. United falls 52-45 and are now (4-7) on the season. R/W led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter and pretty much maintained that advantage througout. The home team, Cougars shot 32 free throws in the game. Arianna Villareal scored 17 points for the Red Storm.

The West Central Heat girls earned a 65-57 win over Ridgewood in a Lincoln Trail Conference contest in Biggsville. Carley Lafary led the (5-2) Heat with 24 points. Mady Reed was also in double figures with 11 points.

Junior High

The ICS Trojan 8th grade girls basketball team is headed to the class 1A state finals at Clinton Junior High School this weekend. The Lady Trojans blew out Cambridge 37-4 last night in the Williamsfield sectional championship game. ICS led 25-2 at the half. Reece Bertelsen led all scorers in the game with 17 points. The (18-4) Trojans will take on (21-3) Mt. Pulaski at 11:30 on Saturday morning in the quarterfinals. The winner moves on to the semi-finals that start at 5:00 on Saturday afternoon. The 3rd place and championship games will be played next Thursday night.
