Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Dec. 17, 2019

Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan girls basketball team bounced back from a loss on Saturday to Havana with a 49-33 road victory over Orion. The Titans cracked down defensively, only allowing three points apiece in the 1st and 4th quarters. Carly Gillen scored 20 points and Ryley Huston had 19, both for Monmouth-Roseville. The Titans get their 10th win against just two losses on the season. We’ll have the Monmouth-Roseville/Annawan Bravette game on AM 1330/FM 94.1 WRAM and online at radiomonmouth.com on Thursday night.

The Knoxville/Abingdon-Avon Holiday Tournament pool play action continued last night. At Abingdon-Avon High School, it was Farmington edging out the host Lady Tornadoes 49-45 and Elmwood beat Ridgewood. At Knoxville High School, West Central beat the Knoxville JV 65-44 and the Knoxville varsity defeated ROWVA 74-28. Tonight’s schedule has United facing Elmwood and Farmington taking on Ridgewood at Abingdon-Avon High School. Over at Knoxville High School, it’s ROWVA vs. Illini Bluffs.

Lewistown continued their torrid start to the season, remaining undefeated at (10-0) with a 97-23 win over Rushville/Industry. Anna Heffren scored 29 points for L-Town.

Four more games were played in the United Holiday Round-Robin Boys Basketball Tournament last night at the Fieldhouse and old Warren High School gymnasiums. The first game pitted the two undefeated teams in the tourney against one another. Knoxville beat Ridgewood 55-43, behind 16 points from Jason Hise and 14 from Eli Loving. Knoxville is (8-2) overall and (3-0) in the tournament, while Ridgewood drops to (6-5) and (2-1). The United Red Storm remained in the hunt for a tournament title with a 60-46 win over West Prairie. Declan Flynn again led the Red Storm in scoring with 20 points. Evan Wynne was right behind with Flynn 17. United is (2-1) in the tournament and (8-4) overall. The final game of the night saw Riverdale hit a shot a buzzer to beat West Central 55-53. Nate Bigger had 21 and Landen Beelman had 14 for West Central, who fall to (0-3) in the tournament. Riverdale is (1-2). After a night-off tonight, the tourney continutes tomorrow night with Ridgewood vs. Riverdale and West Central against West Prairie in the Fieldhouse and United vs. Knoxville in the old Warren High School gym.

Wrestling

The Monmouth-Roseville wrestling team swept Quincy Notre Dame and Peoria Manual to go to (7-3) in dual matches so far this season. Getting two wins for Monmouth-Roseville was Kevin Bikopo, Alfredo Garcia, Journey Senn, Jesus Rojas, Martin Arteaga and Ashton Anderson.

Swimming and Diving

The Monmouth Roseville Boys Swim Team was back in the pool last night with three of its four members. The Titans travelled to Dunlap High School for a quad meet that also included Metamora High School and Wethersfield High School. Tanner Trego started the evening off with a strong 6th place finish in the 200 yard freestyle. Logan Trego ended the 50 freestyle with a 5th place finish and a 6th place finish in the 100 freestyle.

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville Jr. High basketball teams travelled to Orion Monday night in Prairieland Conference play. The 7th grade Titans fell to the Chargers 35-32. Leading Monmouth-Roseville in scoring was Andy Myers with 9 points. The 8th grade Titans won 56-39 over the Chargers, behind 18 points from Darrion Smith.

The ICS Trojan 7th and 8th grade boys swept Costa at ICS Jr. High in Monmouth last night. The Trojan 7th grade was victorious 26-21. Steven Gibbs led ICS with 12 points. The ICS 8th grade blew out the Friars 56-26. Jake Steele poured in 23 points to lead ICS.
