The Monmouth-Roseville Titan varsity girls basketball team hosted the Annawan Bravettes at the Shoebox and Monmouth-Roseville High School. The Bravettes won class 1A state championships as recently as 2014 and 2017 but have gotten off to a mediocre start this season. The Titans have gotten off to a great start to the 2019-20 season and blasted out of the gate last night as well, leading 19-7 after the 1st period. Monmouth-Roseville led 53-33 at one point late in the 3rd quarter before the Bravettes made a late push before falling by nine points, 64-55. The Titans are now (11-2) overall and Annawan falls to below .500 at (5-6). Carly Gillen led Monmouth-Roseville in scoring with 25 points. Ryley Huston and Lily Cundiff each contributed 14 points to the winning cause as well. Cundiff was also honored in the 3rd quarter after her fourth, 3-pointer of the game. Already owning the single season 3-point shot record holder, Cundiff made her 118th career long-ball to hold that record now also. Monmouth-Roseville gets back on the floor tomorrow in the first game of a girl-boy basketball double header. Camp Point Central/Southeastern comes to Monmouth-Roseville High School to play the varsity girls at 5, followed by the Camp Point Central/Monmouth-Roseville varsity boys game at 6:30. We’ll have both of them on Sunny 97.7 WMOI with the pregame show starting at 4:45. The Annawan Bravette junior varsity knocked off Monmouth-Roseville 36-35 on a basket with under 10 seconds left in the game. Chevelle Wolf led Monmouth-Roseville with 15 points.
Pool play in the Knoxville/Abingdon-Avon girls basketball holiday tournament finished up last night at both Abingdon-Avon and Knoxville High Schools last night. At Abingdon-Avon, Farmington nailed down a spot in the tournament title game with a 48-36 win over Elmwood. The Lady Farmers end pool play with a perfect (4-0) record. The hosts Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes defeated United 54-37 to take second place in the pool. Ashley Jones had 19 and Emma Ginther had 17 for A-Town, while Luci Kane had 14 for United. Knoxville and Illini Bluffs met at Knoxville High School, with the winner getting the other championship game spot. Trailing 45-44, Knoxville’s Cassidy Grady hits a half-court shot at the buzzer to win the game 47-45 and send the Blue Bullets to the title match up with the Lady Farmers. ROWVA beat West Central 50-47 in the first game in Knoxville. That sets up championship day at Knoxville High School tomorrow. United will play the Knoxville JV at 10:00 tomorrow morning for 9th place. Ridgewood and West Central meet at 11:45 for 7th, followed by Elmwood and ROWVA for 5th at 1:15. Abingdon-Avon battles Illini Bluffs at 3:00 for 3rd and then Farmington and Knoxville hit the floor at 4:30 for the tournament championship game.
Elsewhere last night, Galesburg was beaten by Sterling 57-36 at Sterling High School in a Western Big Six Conference contest.
Junior High
The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys 7th and 8th grade swept West Central in non-conference action. The 7th grade Titans improved to 9-5 on the season with a 46-30 win. Ethan Clark led Monmouth-Roseville with 12 points. The 8th grade Titans are now 7-7 on the season with a 37-16 victory. Rhett Willett led the way for the Titans with 8 points. Monmouth-Roseville will return to action at home after the holiday break on January 6th against Bushnell Prairie City.
The United junior high boys took on LaHarpe/Dallas City. The 7th grade Red Storm won 34-19, behind 19 points from Elliott Copeland. The United 8th grade also won 28-9. Hunter Hall led the way for United with 15 points.
