Richard Lee Smith, 81, of Galesburg, passed away at 6:08 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2019, in OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Richard was born November 5, 1938, in Mount Sterling, Illinois, the son of Raymond L. and Wilma (Kendrick) Smith.  He married Donna E. Wyman on February 1, 1958, in Galesburg.  She preceded him in death on August 26, 2010.

He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews, including Matt Smith, Mark Smith, and Tracy Smith.  In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Timmy, who passed away in 1962; and a sister, Patsy Darlene Smith.

Richard moved to Galesburg at a very young age.  He worked as a laborer at Butler Manufacturing for 32 years, retiring in 2005.  He was a member of United Steel Workers #2629, where he held a number of offices and served as the committeeman for a number of years.

He served in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964.

Richard was of the Christian faith.

Visitation will be 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel.  Graveside service will follow at noon in Westfall Cemetery, near Victoria.  Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate.  Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
