Elbert “Leo” Simmons, age 80, of Knoxville, Illinois, died at 4:35 P.M. on Friday, January 17, 2020 at his home, surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born on May 11, 1939 in Hardin County, Cave-In-Rock, Illinois, the son of Elbert “Ebby” Young and Beulah “Dessie” (Fields) Simmons. In February of 2000, Leo was married to Candace Nelson-Madden in Yorkville, Illinois.
Left to cherish Leo’s memory is his loving wife of nearly twenty years, Candace Simmons of Knoxville; three children: Katherin Franklin of Colorado, Anthony Lee (and Mary) Simmons of Big Rock, Illinois, Larry (and Margi) Simmons of Yorkville, Illinois; three step-children: Amber (and Chad) Green of Yorkville, Kelly (and Kelli) Madden of Yorkville, Jody (and Bo Natoli) Madden of Largo, Florida; fourteen grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Hazel.
Leo began working for Caterpillar in Aurora, Illinois in 1959, retiring after thirty years in 1989. Shortly after retirement from Cat, Leo and another gentleman started a business together, A&L Tree Service in Oswego, Illinois, which lasted for thirteen and a half years. He was a member of the Plano Christian Church in Plano, Illinois, as well as the Christian Motorcycle Association. Leo absolutely loved to visit with people, and will be remembered for his ability to never meet a stranger. He also loved riding his motorcycle and building things.
Cremation rites will be accorded. A celebration of Leo’s life will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2020 from 12:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. at the Party Lodge, 1312 East Church Street, Sandwich, Illinois 60548.
