Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Jan. 14, 2020

Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan girls basketball team hosted the Midwest Central/Delavan co-op. It was a rematch of the exhilarating game played between these two schools at the end of last season. A double overtime 98-86 win by Midwest Central in a regional semi-final. It didn’t look like last night’s game would come close to matching the thrill of last year’s game at the start as Monmouth-Roseville fell behind 22-10 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Titans would cut the deficit to five points at the half at 34-29. The lead remained about that through the 3rd quarter but the 4th quarter got interesting. Monmouth-Roseville would get the lead down to one with seconds to go in the period and send the Lady Raiders to the free throw line. Following two misses, Monmouth-Roseville had a shot to win at the buzzer but the final shot grazed the front of the rim, giving Midwest Central a 69-68 victory. The Titan’s Carly Gillen led all scorers with 28 points. Kelci Shelton and Ryley Huston were also in double figures with 13 points each. Midwest Central was led by their outstanding point guard, Mady Harper’s, 25 points.

The West Central Heat girls beat ROWVA/Williamsfield 55-39 in a busy night of Lincoln Trail Conference action. Carley Lafary led West Central with 22 points.

The United Red Storm lost to Stark County 39-24, Wethersfield beat Ridgewood 59-55, Annawan edged Mercer County 57-54 and it was Princeville over Galva 60-27.

The Knoxville Blue Bullets hadn’t been on the floor for a week and a half but shook the rust off to beat North Fulton 50-33. Knoxville improved to (22-1) overall on the season.

Abingdon-Avon knocked off Rushville/Industry 58-23 on the strength of 16 points from Ashley Jones and 12 points apiece from Delaynie Goehl and Emma Ginther.

Rock Island beat Macomb 84-47.

Junior High

In junior high boys basketball, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans hosted Sherrard in Prairieland Conference play. The 7th grade Titans lost a hard fought game 31-29. Titan Scorers: Martwan Butler 9, Payton Thompson 6, Junior Avendano 6, The 8th grade Titans fell 37-18 to the Tigers. Titan Scorers: Nico Avendano 6, Tyler Finnicum 6.

The ICS Trojan boys hosted West Central for their 8th grade Recognition Night at ICS Jr. High. ICS won 7th grade game 25-17. Andrew Way led the way with 13 points for ICS. Hayden Eisnicher and Colby Booton had 5 points apiece for West Central. ICS also won the 8th grade game 54-31. Jake Steele led ICS with 22 points and Ty Corsaro chipped in with 15 points. West Central was led by CJ Cassiday’s 12 and Noah Lenahan’s 8 points.
