Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Jan. 22, 2020

Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys hosted the Sherrard Tigers in a non-conference match up. It was a close game all the way through three quarters before the Titans broke the game open with a big final period. The Tigers only trailed 44-41 heading into the last quarter but were outscored 24-15. Monmouth-Roseville gets their 3rd straight win 68-56, avenging a season-opening loss to Sherrard in the Orion Tip-Off Classic. Rashaun King had 23 points to lead Monmouth-Roseville, who improve to (10-9) with the win. Ben Anderson also was in double figures for Monmouth-Roseville with 18 points, eight of which came in the decisive 4th quarter. Sherrard falls to (8-11) and were led by Will Franck’s 18 points.

Knoxville was the place for an important Prairieland Conference North Divison match up between two of the area’s best boys basketball teams. In a back-and-forth game, the Knoxville Blue Bullets trailed 40-38 with 50 seconds left but would score the final four points in a 42-40 victory. Knoxville sophomore, David Hise led Knoxville with 16 points. He scored 12 of the Blue Bullets’ 14 first half points. Seniors Lukas Tinkham and Ryan Adolphson each scored 11 points to lead the A-Town offensive attack. Knoxville is (16-3) overall and (2-0) in the Prairieland North. Abingdon-Avon falls to (14-5) overall and (1-1) in the division.

It was a full night of action in the Lincoln Trail Conference in boys basketball. One of those match ups featured two or our most local teams doing battle. The United Red Storm traveled to Biggsville to take on the West Central Heat. The game was tied at 30-all after the first two periods. United led 41-40 heading to the 4th quarter and would make 11 free throws in that period to get a 64-54 win. Declan Flynn led United with 21 points, with 11 of those in the fourth quarter. Declan’s brother, Cormaic, was also in double figures with 17 points. Jacob Dutton, with 12 and Evan Wynne with 11 points closed out the scoring for the Red Storm. Landen Beelman led West Central with 15 points. Nathan Bigger chipped in with 13 for the Heat. United moves to (13-5) overall and (3-0) in the LTC. West Central drops to (5-13) and (0-2) in conference play.

Elsewhere in the Lincoln Trail Conference last night, Ridgewood beat Mercer County 65-45, Annawan defeated Princeville 65-41, ROWVA/Williamsfield got a 70-60 win over Galva and it was Wethersfield over Stark County 47-17.

The Macomb Bombers lost to Pekin 55-25.

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville Jr. High basketball split a pair of games with ICS last night in Roseville on Pack the Place Night. The 7th grade Titans won 27-24. Junior Avendano led Monmouth-Roseville with 8 points. Nick Huston and David Simmons had nine points each for ICS. The Trojans won the 8th grade game 32-30 to gain the split. ICS was led by Jake Steele’s 12 points. Nico Avendano led Monmouth-Roseville with ten points.

The Monmouth-Roseville Junior High girls volleyball team traveled to Orion for their Prairieland conference opener.The 7th grade Titans were victorious in two sets, 25-22 and 25-19, earning them the conference’s traveling banner. Leading scorers on the night were Mia Reynolds with 10 service points and two kills. Emily Gunn had 10 service points and 4 assists. Monmouth-Roseville’s 7th grade overall record improves to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 for conference. The 8th grade Lady Titans won their match, 25-17 and 25-21. Stat leaders were Elise Blaesing with 10 serving points and 6 assists. Brianna Woodard with 10 kills and 2 blocks. Raelyn Stokes with 15 digs. The 8th grade Titans are 3-0 overall and 1-0 in conference.

The Monmouth-Roseville Jr High wrestling teams took on Galesburg Tuesday night. The Titans were able to walk away with 4 wins. Bawi Thang came away with a decision. Maveryk Lee won by pin. Angel Lopez secured a huge come from behind pin. Kevin Martinez won by pin also. The Titans will host Knoxville, Illini Bluffs and United on Thursday at 5:30.
