Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Jan. 24, 2020

Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan girls basketball team broke a 4-game losing streak on Wednesday night with a win over Abingdon-Avon and were looking to start a new multi-game streak last night with a trip to Augusta to play perennial power Camp Point Central/Southeastern. The Titans ran their new streak to two wins in a row with a 62-49 win over the Panthers. Monmouth-Roseville moved to (19-7) with the win.

The Abingdon-Avon Tornado girls hosted Bushnell-Prairie City for a Prairieland Conference cross-division match up. Both teams were coming off losses the night before and both owned three-game losing streaks. The Tornadoes are the ones that broke their streak. A-Town trailed 16-12 at the end of the first eight minutes but outscored the Spartans 16-6 in the second period to take a 28-22 lead into the intermission. They maintained that advantage heading to the fourth quarter and ended with a 60-57 victory. Three total players fouled out and four other girls had four fouls at the end of the physical battle. 54 free throws were shot in the game. Emma Ginther led a-Town with 27 points and Abbey Donaldson had 25 for BPC.

The Lincoln Trail Conference girls basketball tournament pool-play portion of the schedule concluded last night. We have our match ups set for championship day tomorrow. Princeville will play Stark County for the title at 7:00 tomorrow night at Alwood High School in Woodhull. Princeville beat Annawan 60-55 last night to win Pool A and Stark defeated Mercer County 38-33 to win Pool B. Also last night, West Central was beaten 39-33 in overtime by Ridgewood. West Central was led in scoring by Carley Lafary. United will play the first game at Alwood High School tomorrow at 1:00 for 9th place against Galva. West Central will face off with ROWVA/Williamsfield at 2:30 for 7th, Ridgewood and Wethersfield match up at 4:00 for 5th, followed by Annawan and Mercer County for 3rd at 5:30 and Princeville and Stark County for all the marbles at 7:30.

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls lost to Rock Island 60-52 on the road in a Western Big Six Conference battle. Riley Jenkins led Galesburg with 18 points.

In a match up of the #2 and #3 girls basketball teams in the Class 1A girls AP poll, #2 Lewistown had no trouble with Brimfield, beating the Lady Indians 78-56. It was a Prairieland Conference cross-division battle in Brimfield. Anna Heffren had 27 points for Lewistown. Lewistown is now (22-1), while Brimfield drops to (21-2).

Swimming and Diving

The Monmouth-Roseville boys swim team took part in a 3-team meet in Macomb yesterday. The Titans were joined by Macomb and Keokuk, IA. Some top finishes for Monmouth-Roseville included 2nd place finishes in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle races by senior Logan Trego. Fellow senior Cullen Vickroy was 3rd in the 100 yard backstroke for his best finish and sophomores John Mattan placed 5th in the 100 yard breaststroke and Tanner Trego was 6th in the same race.

Junior High

In junior high boys basketball, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans took on Brimfield. The 7th grade Titans won 29-27. Titan scorer for Monmouth-Rose was Martwan Butler with 11. The 8th grade Titans fell 34-27. Nico Avendano led Monmouth-Roseville in scoring with 12. The 7th grade will start Regional play on Saturday vs. Mercer County at 10:00 at Rockridge.

The ICS jr. high basketball boys traveled to Joy to play Mercer County. Mer Co took the 7th grade contest 25-18. Nick Huston led ICS with six points. Mercer County also won 8th grade game 35-21. Jake Steele had 9 points for the Trojans. The next game for ICS 7th grade will be Monday January 27th at 6:00 pm at Williamsfield for regionals. The Trojans received a bye in the tournament and play the winner of Peoria Hollis and Bartonville Grade School.

The Monmouth-Roseville junior high wrestling team hosted Knoxville, Illini Bluffs and United at Monmouth-Roseville Junior High in Roseville. In the first match of the night against Knoxville, Monmouth-Roseville earned a 48-36 victory. Asten Roller, Bawi Thang and Keigler Yoder all earned pin-wins for Monmouth-Roseville. In the second team match-up vs. Illini Bluffs, three Titans garnered pins. Yoder, Justice Tshibuyi, and Angel Lopez fought their way to pins. To finish the night, the Titans secured five wins vs. United. Alejandro Morales scored a pin. Maveryk Lee won a decision. Tshibuyi and Lopez both had pins. Jennika Raymond also record her first pinfall victory. The Titans will compete in the Rockridge Invite tomorrow morning at 9:00.
