Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Jan. 27, 2020

Basketball

Championship day of the Lincoln Trail Conference girls basketball tournament took place at Alwood High School in Woodhull on Saturday. The day started with United playing Galva for 9th place. This was the 3rd meeting between the two clubs this season, with United winning the first two. This time around, Galva gets the W, beating the Red Storm 54-47. Jennifer Shimmin led United with 12 points. Galva’s Lexi Stone led all scorers with 23 points. Next up was the West Central/ROWVA-Williamsfield battle for 7th place. ROWVA gets the win, 53-32. West Central was without their top scorer and rebounder, Carley Lafary. Mady Reed scored half of West Central’s points with 16. Calyn Garza led R/W with 13 points. Ridgewood knocked off Wethersfield 55-49 for 5th place. Brecken Anderson led Ridgewood with 21 points. Wethersfield got 15 points from Lexi Nichols. Annawan continued the day of upsets, seeding-wise, with a 55-34 win over Mercer County. Finally, the #1 and #3 seeds matched up in the championship game and that’s where the upsets stopped as top-seeded Princeville dominated from the opening tip, blowing out Stark County 55-25. Brinlee Bauman led all scorers had 21 for the tournament champs.

In boys high school basketball on Saturday, Abingdon-Avon High School was the place for the annual Great Western Shootout. Orion had no trouble with Illini Central in the opening game, winning 61-26. Ridgewood upset Knoxville in the second game 56-49. Sherrard defeated a short-handed Peoria Heights 40-29 in game three. State-ranked Rockridge had no trouble with Midwest Central, winning 77-38. Then the host teams, the A-Town girls and boys, took the court next. The A-Town girls fell to the Midwest Central/Delavan co-op 60-36. Ashley Jones had 20 points for the Lady Tornadoes. Midwest Central’s Mady Harper went over the 2,000 career point mark in the game. She also took over the top-spot on the school career scoring mark as well, passing Jennifer Berg. The Abingdon-Avon boys also lost to Athens 46-30 in the 6th game of the day. Graham Struhs and Ryan Adolphson led A-Town with ten points each. Wethersfield upset state-ranked Peoria Quest in an exciting final game of the day. The Flying Geese beat the Gators 59-48. Coltin Quagliano had a triple-double of ten points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds to lead the Geese.

Wrestling

The Monmouth-Roseville Jr. High wrestling team competed against 13 other teams on Saturday at the Rockridge Invitational Tournament. Eleven Titans stepped up to score multiple pins in the tournament and place at the tops of their weight divisions. Caleb Dillard went 2-2 and placed 4th. Bawi Thang went 3-1 and placed 5th. Jekxel Rivera went 3-1 also placing 5th in his weight class. Jorge Roman went 3-1 to garner a 5th place finish. Gabe Ortiz-Mora went 3-1 on the day coming up just short in his championship match to take 2nd place. In B bracket competition, Cohen Linze placed 4th overall. Ozzy Carmona took 2nd place. Kevin Martinez also took 2nd place with a 2-1 record. Josh Velasquez took 4th place on the day. Monmouth-Roseville will travel to Sherrard on Thursday at 5:30 to face the host Tigers and Riverdale

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville 7th grade boys basketball team started Class 3A Regional play on Saturday at Rockridge. The Titans topped Mercer County 48-30 to advance to the semifinal round on tonight at Rockridge vs the host Rockets at 5:30. Leading Titan Scorers were Martwan Butler with 11, Junior Avendano had 9 and Andy Myers and Ethan Clark had 8 apiece.

The United Red Storm 7th grade boys basketball team split a pair of games on Saturday. The Red Storm beat Colona 36-25 in their first game but had their season end with a 32-24 loss to Princeville in their second game.

The Warren County Thunder youth wrestling team took part in the Rocket Fuel Open at Rockridge High School on Sunday. Keegan Smith, Izak Greenlief and Hunter Conchas won their tournaments, with Zander Burton and Landon Peterson bringing home 2nd place medals. Carter Smith and Ayden Dean were 3rd in their weight divisions and Jameson Raymond, Jentry Dean and Brody Butler were 4th.
