Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Jan. 29, 2020

Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys and girls basketball teams were in action last night. The Titan girls were at home, taking on the Western Big Six Conference’s Alleman Pioneers. The Titans led 23-13 at the half and would go on for a 46-30 win. Carly Gillen led Monmouth-Roseville with 17 points. She was joined in double figures by Ryley Huston with 14 and Kelci Shelton with 11. The Titans are now (21-7) overall.

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys took the long trip to Quincy to battle the Notre Dame Raiders. The Titans dug themselves a 13-4 hole at the end of the first quarter and were never able to recover, losing 60-54. Rashaun King led all scorers in the game with 25 points for Monmouth-Roseville, who fall back to .500 on the season at (10-10) with the loss. Quincy Notre Dame is (7-12).

The Lincoln Trail Conference is starting its boys basketball tournament tomorrow night. Teams squeezed one more regular season conference game in last night. The United Red Storm won their 7th straight game to improve their overall record to (15-5) and remained the lone undefeated team in league play at (5-0) with a 68-35 win over Stark County. Jacob Dutton led United with 14 points. Evan Wynne and Declan Flynn each scored 13 points for the Red Storm as well.

The West Central Heat lost a close game to ROWVA/Williamsfield. Nate Bigger had 14 points to lead West Central. Jackson Krieger and Jordon Roller chipped in with 12 points each for the Heat.

Also in LTC play, Princeville knocked off Galva 71-47….Ridgewood edged out Wethersfield 59-58 on a shot at the buzzer…..Annawan defeated Mercer County 56-43.

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys lost for the first time in 16 games on Saturday in the Chicago Orr Shootout but got back on the winning track last night with a 66-52 Western Big Six Conference win over Quincy. Jaylin McCants had 25 points for Galesburg, which moves him to 9th on the Galesburg all-time scoring list. He also pulled down 21 rebounds. Galesburg is leading the Big Six standings at (7-2) and are (21-3) overall.

Abingdon-Avon beat Elmwood 40-38 in overtime in a Prairieland Conference North Division match up. Graham Struhs led A-Town with 22 points.

Knoxville had no trouble with Illini West 57-38.

Swimming and Diving

The Monmouth-Roseville boys swim team were at Dunlap High School last night for a meet against the host Eagles, Macomb and Wethersfield. Cullen Vickroy had the top finish for the Titans with a 4th place in the 200 yard freestyle race. The 400 yard freestyle relay team of Vickroy, John Mattan, Logan Trego and Tanner Trego placed 3rd, dropping four seconds off their personal best time.

Bowling

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls bowling team defeated Kewanee last night 2181-2058. Leading the scoring for Galesburg was Casey Folger. Casey had a high single-game was 206. She also had the top 3-game series of 562. Tonight, the Lady Streaks will host Rock Island at Abbe Lanes in Abingdon. It will be senior night for Galesburg.
