Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Jan. 7, 2020

Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan girls hosted their West Central Conference North Division rivals for a non-division game at Monmouth-Roseville Hight School. The second meeting between the five North Division schools are the only games that count in the standings. The Titans put up 54 points in the first half and never trailed, doubling up the Bombers 78-39 by time the final horn sounded. Monmouth-Roseville’s Ryley Huston scored 25 points to lead all scorers and Carly Gillen chipped in with 22. Lily Cundiff nailed three, 3-pointers for 11 points total. Macomb freshman Ainsley Holthaus scored 15 to lead the Bombers, who fall to (4-12) on the year. Monmouth-Roseville’s win made them (17-3) and started a big week for regional seeding purposes. Tomorrow night, the travel to (15-3) Illini West. The Titans host (11-1) Quincy Notre Dame in their West Central Conference North Division opener on Friday and end the week with a game against (10-6) Abingdon-Avon in the Galesburg Shootout on Saturday morning.

The West Central Lady Heat beat BPC at home in Biggsville in another non-conference match up. The Heat beat the Spartans 51-42 behing Carley Lafary’s 27 and Mady Reed’s 17 points.

It was a near, full schedule of games in the Lincoln Trail Conference. ROWVA/Williamsfield beat Galva 53-51 on a shot at the buzzer by Calyn Garza. Elsewhere, Mercer County knocked off Ridgewood 66-28 as Karli Stineman went over the 1,000 point mark in her Mercer County career. Stark County defeated Wethersfield 53-46 and Princeville beat Annawan 60-39.

Junior High

In junior high boys basketball, the Monmouth-Roseville Jr. High basketball teams faced Bushnell Prairie City. The 7th grade Titans fell 42-29 to BPC. Leading Titan Scorers: Andy Myers 8, Martwan Butler 7. The 8th grade Titans dropped a hard fought game 39-31. Leading Titan Scorers: Rhett Willett 7, Tyler Finnicum 6, Fillimon Thang 6

The United Red Storm boys swept Wethersfield in a pair of Lincoln Trail Conference games. The Red Storm 7th grade won 35-21 behind Elliott Copeland’s 20 points. The United 8th grade was also victorious 39-33. Hunter Hall had 17 for the Red Storm.

United school district wrestlers, 8th grader Jake McElwee, 7th grader Carson Davies and 2nd grader Carter Hare entered the Burlington Notre Dame wrestling tournament on Saturday along with over 350 other youth wrestlers. Hare went (2-1) to place 2nd in his weight class. McElwee went (3-0) with two pins to win his weight class. United Red Storm Jr High will hold their first team meet on January 23rd at Monmouth-Roseville Jr High at 5:00 PM.
