Basketball

The 3rd-ranked girls basketball team in the lastest Class 2A AP poll, Knoxville, hosted Abingdon-Avon in a Prairieland Conference North Division match up. Despite 30 points from A-Town sophomore Ashley Jones, the Tornadoes fall to Knoxville 63-49. The Blue Bullets led 29-24 at the half and by ten points 48-38 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The scrappy Lady Tornadoes would cut the deficit to four points a few times in the second half but lost starter Delaynie Goehl to fouls and Emma Curry and Brooke Pieper to injuries and couldn’t get over the hump down the stretch. Hannah Jones led three players from Knoxville in double figures with 19 points. Kynlee Stearns and Breena Shreeves had 17 and ten points respectively. Knoxville is (23-1) overall and remains perfect in the Prairieland’s North Division at (3-0). They trail Brimfield by a half game in the standings. Brimfield is (20-1) overall and (4-0) in the North. The two teams will meet up on February 5th in Knoxville. Abingdon-Avon is (11-8) overall and (1-2) in the North Division of the Prairieland Conference.

The Camp Point Central/Southeastern Lady Panther Classic Tournament continued pool play last night. Lewistown, the #1 ranked team in the state of Illinois in Class 1A according the latest AP poll, got their first loss of the season. The Lady Indians were beaten by Pleasant Plains 46-39. Lewistown fall to (1-1) in pool play and (20-1) overall. It’s the 3rd undefeated team that Plains has knocked off this year. Also in Camp Point, Illini West is (2-0) in their pool after getting a 45-42 win over Brown County. IW is (18-3) overall.

Junior High

In junior high girls volleyball, Monmouth-Roseville hosted Ridgewood for their home opener in Roseville last night. The 7th grade Lady Titans won in two sets, 25-21 and 25-15. Leading in service points was Molly McVey with 9 and she also handed out 8 assists. Mia Reynolds led in kills with 5. The Titan’s record improves 2-0. The 8th grade Titans completed a sweep on the night with a 25-18, 25-17 victory. Stat leaders for the match are Elise Blaesing with 4 kills, 9 serving points, and 3 assists. Emma Ferry had 9 serving points and Natalie Boyd had 4 aces.The 8th grade Titans are also 2-0 overall. The Titans will have their first Conference game on Tuesday against the Orion Chargers at Orion at 6:30.
