The lid stayed on the Scots’ basket the entire night, but they stayed close in a 66-59 loss at Grinnell.
Monmouth hit just 20 of their 66 shots from the floor, but closed the
gap in the final 10 minutes. The Scots took an early lead before the
Pioneers climbed ahead midway through the first quarter and maintained
the edge the rest of the way.
Trailing 51-37 heading into the fourth quarter, the Scots came out firing, cutting the margin to 52-45 on Carley Turnbull’s bucket at the 7:12 mark. The Pioneers kept a comfortable margin before Kaitlyn Osmulski’s
jumper with 33 second left closed the gap to 64-59. An Osmulski foul on
the ensuing Grinnell possession stopped the clock with 29 seconds left,
but Monmouth’s final three shots in the last 22 seconds missed their
mark, putting the Scots in a four-way tie for third in the Midwest
Conference.
The Scots, who got 17 points and 11 rebounds from Carley Turnbull and another 11 points from Becca Gallis, host Lawrence in a 3 p.m. contest Saturday.
