Monmouth Fire Department prepares for winter weather

The Monmouth Fire Department shares some tips to help keep everyone safe during these winter months. MFD Chief Casey Rexroat warns travelers to stay home if possible, if not, have a kit prepared in the vehicle in case of an emergency. Items in this kit include: cell phone charger, blanket, shovel, flashlight and water. If there is snow built up around the vehicle, clear the tailpipe to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.

Rexroat shares advice for community members:

“Just want to remind people again to check their smoke alarms, check their CO, just prepare for the winter driving and stuff, and to wear layers when you’re outside. Just be safe out there.”

Captain Craig Cozadd alerts homeowners:

“Basically just use the rule of thumb: that you don’t use things to heat your house that you wouldn’t normally use.”

Lastly, make sure space heaters are plugged directly into the wall outlet and if snow is built up around the furnace exhaust on the side of the house, to clear that as well.
