Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Feb. 17, 2020

Basketball

The United Red Storm and West Central Heat boys basketball teams had make up games on Saturday. The United Red Storm hosted Rushville/Industry at the Fieldhouse at United High School. It was United that got off to a great start, leading 16-14 at the end of the 1st quarter but the visiting Rockets blasted off from the start of the second quarter, eventually pulling away for a 72-48 non-conference victory. Evan Wynne led United with 13 points. Jackson Bergren and Landon Conard had eight points each for the Red Storm as well. United falls to (19-9) overall. Rushville improves to (16-8).

The West Central Heat made up their Lincoln Trail Conference game against Ridgewood in Woodhull on Saturday. The Heat fall 59-50. Landen Beelman led West Central with 15 points. Jordon Roller and Nate Bigger were also in double figures for the Heat with 12 points each. Ganon Greenman led all scorers with 27 points for Ridgewood, who are now (17-12) overall and pull into a tie with United for 3rd place in the LTC standings at (5-2). Annawan and Wethersfield lead the conference with matching (5-1) records.

Also, ROWVA/Williamsfield was beaten by llini Bluffs 58-56.

Wrestling

High School wrestling sectionals were held on Saturday. Three Monmouth-Roseville Titans and five Knoxville Blue Bullets were at the Olympia sectionals and were trying to get themselves qualified for the state finals in Champaign this coming weekend. Jesus Rojas went (1-2) for Monmouth-Roseville and did not get to move on. Martin Arteaga and Kevin Bikopo went (0-2) in the tournament. Knoxville’s Dalton Crouse took 4th place at the same sectional. Crouse went (3-2) in the 220 pound weight class.

Bowling

Also high school girls bowling sectionals took place on Saturday as well. Abingdon-Avon’s Alexis Wilson rolled a 6-game score of 1163 to place 12th overall at the United Township Sectional. She was just 56 pins from qualifying for the state finals. The Galesburg Silver Streak girls placed 11th as a team in the same sectional and had one of their ladies move on to the finals in Rockford this weekend. Casey Folger had a fantastic day rolling a 6-game score of 1245. That was good enough for the second best score of the day.

Junior High

In junior high volleyball on Saturday. Monmouth-Roseville hosted an 8th grade round-robin tournament. The Titans placed 2nd, going (2-1). Their only loss was to the tournament champs, Macomb. United went (1-2) for the day and Abingdon-Avon was (0-3).
