Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Feb. 19, 2020

Basketball

The #1 team in the class 1A girls basketball AP poll was in action last night in Havana sectional semi-finals. Lewistown got pushed to the limit by the #5 team, Princeville, before pulling away late in a 56-48 win. The Lady Indians get their 30th win against just one loss. Princeville ends their season at (30-4). Also in a loaded Havana sectional was the #9 team Brimfield. Brimfield lost to Illini Bluffs 57-30 in the second semi-final. That sets up a battle for the sectional championship between (30-1) Lewistown against (27-6) Illini Bluffs tomorrow night at 7:00. Lewistown finished in 3rd place at the state finals last season.

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls basketball hosted a class 3A regional at John Thiel Gym last night. The Silver Streaks just couldn’t get on track offensively in a 50-34 loss to Western Big Six Conference rival Rock Island. Chelsea Stevenson led Galesburg with 12 points. The Streaks end their season at (18-14). In the first game of the night, Peoria knocked off Limestone 66-30. The (26-3) Lions will take on (23-9) Rock Island tomorrow night at 7:00 at Galesburg High School for the regional championship and Rock Island Sectional berth that comes with it.

It was a big night of boys basketball around the area as class 1A and 2A schools get their final week of the regular season started. The Monmouth-Roseville Titans hosted the Farmington Farmers at Monmouth-Roseville High School. The Titans jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the first quarter but Farmington would cut the gap to a 14-13 deficit at the end of the first eight minutes. The Farmers took that momentum into the second quarter where they would outscore Monmouth-Roseville 22-8 and take a commanding 35-22 lead into the halftime break. Farmington got the biggest lead of 14 points early in the 3rd quarter but the scrappy Titans kept chipping away at the lead and get it down to two points with a minute left. The comeback stalled out in the final seconds and Farmington gets the 62-57 win. Rashaun King led the (13-13) Titans with 20 points. Conner Olson had 15 as well for Monmouth-Roseville. Corbin Rutledge led (20-7) Farmington with 25 points.

A full schedule of games in the Lincoln Trail Conference was on the docket last night. The big match up was at Alwood High School between United and the host Ridgewood Spartans. Ganon Greenman led Ridgweood with 25 points in their 57-38 victory over the Red Storm. Declan Flynn led United with 12 points. United falls to (5-3) in the LTC standings, while Ridgwood improves to (6-2). Princeville is in first place at (7-1) in the league after their 62-45 win over West Central. Also last night, Wethersfield remained a game back of Princeville following their 55-35 victory over Mercer County. Annawan is (6-1) in the Lincoln Trail Conference with a 73-61 win over Galva. Also, it was Stark County beating ROWVA/Williamsfield 58-53.

In the Prairieland Conference’s North Division, Abingdon-Avon clinched a division title title after beating Brimfield 39-35 in a defensive slugfest in Abingdon. The Tornadoes finish their division schedule at (5-1). Brimfield can still finish (5-1) in divisional play, as can Farmington, but A-Town swept both clubs during the season to hold the tie-breaker. Ryan Adolphson led the (22-6) Tornadoes with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Orion beat Knoxville 62-53 in a non-conference game in Orion. David Hise led Knoxville with 13 points.

State-ranked Payson-Seymour beat Macomb 55-44.

Junior High

In junior high girls volleyball last night, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans hosted Sherrard in Roseville. The 7th grade Lady Titans were swept 28-26, 25-12. Leading in service points for the night for Monmouth-Roseville was Tatianna Talivaa with 9. Brianna Woodard led in kills with 6 and leading in assists for the night was Mia Reynolds with 14. Overall record is now 6-7 and conference record is 2-6. The 8th grade Lady Titans got a split on the night for Monmouth-Roseville beating the Tigers in the nightcap. With the win, Monmouth-Roseville now has possession of the Prairieland Conference banner. Leading the way stat-wise was Elise Blaesing with 12 assists, and 3 digs. Meyah Hunter with 12 serving points, Raelyn Stokes with 9 serving points and 5 digs. Natalie Boyd with 9 digs and Brianna Woodard with 5 kills. The Titans have a big conference match at Rockridge tonight at Rockridge. The Titans are now 12-3 overall and 6-2 in conference.

On Tuesday, the Monmouth-Roseville Jr. High wrestling team traveled north to face Prairieland Conference foe Orion and a non-conference match against Rock Island Edison. In the match against Orion, the Titans lost 56-36, falling to 2-2 in the conference. Gabe Ortiz-Mora got one of the victories for Monmouth-Roseville. In the non-conference match up with Rock Island Edison, the Titans fell 70-39. Wins came from Bawi Thang, Ozzy Carmona, Jekxel Riveria, and Gabe Ortiz-Mora. The Titans will be back in action tomorrow night at Aledo Intermediate School, in a triangular against Mercer County and Rock Island Washington at 5:00.
