Sandburg Men Come Up Short Against Illinois Valley

Galesburg, IL-Illinois Valley dealt the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team just its second home loss of the season as it beat the Chargers 72-69 on Thursday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

The Chargers (21-8 overall, 5-4 Arrowhead Conference), who close the regular season Tuesday at Black Hawk, dropped to 14-2 on their home court this season despite a near-perfect shooting night from sophomore Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East).

KEY MOMENTS

  • A 3-pointer from Jean Luc Wilson (East Moline, Ill./United Township) put Sandburg ahead 46-44 with 11:30 left and gave the Chargers their first lead since 13-12.
  • The Eagles (11-17, 4-5) answered with eight straight point in 1 minute, 40 seconds to go up 52-46 and never trailed again.
  • Sandburg got within 72-69 on a layup by James Jones (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) with :20.2 left. The Chargers had a chance to tie after IVCC’s Braden Edington missed the front end of a one-and-one with :18.9 to go, but Jones’ 25-footer at the buzzer went off the back rim.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Gowan scored a team-best 23 while going 8 of 9 from the field, including a 4-for-5 mark from 3-point range. Gowan also went 3 for 3 from the free-throw line and tied for the team lead with three steals.

OTHER TOP CHARGERS

  • Wilson scored 14, had three steals and handed out two assists.
  • Sophomore Noah Young (Colfax, Ill./Ridgeview) scored 12 and grabbed five boards.
  • Jones corralled a game-high 14 rebounds, just two off his career-best.
