A professor in the College’s modern languages, literatures and cultures department and a member of the Global Public Health Triad faculty, Thorndike is one of the organizers of a Feb. 25 talk by University of Iowa professor Lina-María Murillo.

Thorndike is also one of the co-hosts of the next Great Decisions discussion, which will be held Feb. 26.

Titled “Planned Parenthood of El Paso: Race and the History of the Birth Control Movement in the U.S. Mexico Borderland” and based on Murillo’s soon-to-be-completed first book, the Global Public Health Triad talk will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Morgan Room in Poling Hall.

Murillo teaches at the University of Iowa, where she is part of two departments – gender, women’s and sexuality studies, and history. Her article “Birth Control, Border Control: The Movement for Contraception in El Paso, Texas 1936-40” is forthcoming with the Pacific Historical Review.

The following evening, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26 in Room 276 in the Center for Science and Business, Thorndike and her department colleague Francisco Ángeles will co-host a Great Decisions discussion on “U.S. Relations with the Northern Triangle.”

The Northern Triangle, made up of the Central American countries of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, is a special target of the Trump Administration, which holds the nations responsible for the large flow of migrants from Latin America to the United States. With U.S. funds cut, how can the Northern Triangle countries curtail migration?

Both Murillo’s talk and the Great Decisions discussion are free and open to the public.
