Coronavirus Preparedness

The Galesburg/Knox County Emergency Management Agency is closely monitoring developments regarding Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), including information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Illinois Department of Public Health. We are also working in cooperation with the Knox County Health Department, which is available to advise us whenever there is a public health or safety concern that may affect our community.

As with any respiratory virus, we recommend everyday practices that will help keep you healthy and avoid illness. Please remember the following good health habits:

  • Frequently wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth, especially with unwashed hands.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw it away. Wash your hands.
  • Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces.
  • Stay at home if you have a fever or are otherwise unwell. Avoid contact with people who have a fever or are otherwise unwell.

Symptoms of the coronavirus include mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing. In any case, if you have these symptoms, seek medical care early to reduce the risk of developing a more severe infection and be sure to share your recent travel history with your healthcare provider. It is recommended that before going to the doctor’s office or urgent care, call with your concerns to avoid contact with others. Please note that this is a rapidly evolving situation, and the City of Galesburg and Knox County Health Department will provide additional information as it becomes available. Please contact the Illinois Department of Public Health COVID-19 hotline at (800) 889-3931 or e-mail DPH.SICK@ILLINOIS.GOV with specific questions about coronavirus. Questions will be answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
