IHSA

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) announced on March 12, 2020, that it has canceled its remaining winter State Series postseason tournaments, which include Boys Basketball, Scholastic Bowl, Drama & Group Interpretation, Music, Debate and Journalism, over concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding that we have received from everyone involved in this process over the past 72 hours,” said Craig Anderson. “We have stressed the fluidity of this situation and have been transparent about the possibility that a suspension or cancellation could occur. While we had support from the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Peoria City/County Health Department to continue our events with limited spectators, it has become untenable to continue the events among our member schools. Multiple schools who are participating or hosting these sports and activities have been forced to withdraw from those roles, clarifying the need for the IHSA to take definitive action. The Board considered suspending the events, but after deliberate discussion, did not believe that was a realistic option within the timeline. We feel for everyone who has been impacted, but must put the health and safety of all involved ahead of these events.”

The IHSA has not made any decisions related to spring sport tournaments at this time.

“It is too early to make any decisions regarding IHSA spring state final tournaments,” said Anderson. “We respect the NCAA’s decision to cancel its spring championships, but also recognize that the exposure and travel by our high school teams is not as expansive as collegiate teams. At this juncture, we recommend that all IHSA spring sport teams consult their local health departments, and follow their recommendations on if and how to proceed with practices and regular-season contests.”

Anderson added, “I also want to commend the coaches and administrators from the Class 1A and Class 2A state finalists who traveled to Peoria today. While obviously disappointed, they conducted themselves with the utmost class as we charted this unprecedented situation together.”

IESA

As recently as late this past Monday afternoon the recommendation of the CDC with respect to the coronavirus (COVID 19) was “don’t be scared, but be prepared”. In the last 24 hours the views and perspectives on the virus, it’s spread and containment, require that the IESA re-evaluate what we can do to balance member interests, the efforts and sacrifices of student-athletes and performers, families and coaches/directors, with our responsibilities as State Citizens. We are doing our best with a rapidly changing situation. The following update is provided for the various activities currently in progress for the IESA.

WRESTLING— IESA received word from Northern Illinois University late Wednesday evening that the University is mandating that our event shall not be held this weekend due to the coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, we are sorry to inform you that the IESA State Wrestling Finals scheduled for this Friday-Saturday, March 13-14 at the Convocation Center on the campus of NIU in DeKalb, IL have been cancelled. At this point in time, there are no plans to re-schedule the tournament. While this is unfortunate for many reasons, we have to comply with the directive from Northern Illinois University. The health and safety of our participants and fans attending the finals is our top priority. Given the nature of the activity, it is an unreasonable expectation to ask athletes to maintain weight controls for an unknown or extended amount of time. We are very disappointed for our athletes and schools who have worked very hard to participate in this event.

Many people have asked if there is a possibility of still holding the tournament at some other venue or some other format—for instance, holding the Class A tournament at one site and the Class AA tournament at another site. At this point in time, things are moving so fast that we hesitate to speculate on what we might be able to do. There is a real possibility that schools may be forced to close by the local or state public health department and then if we had something planned and those plans had to be changed, we have only added to the unfortunate circumstances. If, and we stress if, circumstances would allow IESA to conduct the wrestling state tournament in some format, we will certainly work toward that. But, nothing is guaranteed in terms of conducting the finals.

VOLLEYBALL— 2:15 PM: Update on the status of the IESA Volleyball state series:

  • The 7th grade state finals scheduled for March 13-14 will NOT be played as scheduled this weekend.
  • All 8th grade state series are now suspended – this includes 8th grade regional championships scheduled for tonight, 8th grade sectional championships scheduled for Monday, March 16 and the state finals scheduled for March 20-21.

These decisions are not being made lightly. The IESA will be communicating with state finals hosts, vendors, participating schools, and officials as we consider if both the 7th grade state finals and the remainder of the 8th grade state series could be rescheduled to a different date. We will also be monitoring CDC updates regarding the spread of the coronavirus. Multiple factors, such as site availability, an alternative format, etc. must be taken into consideration as we make a decision if, when, and how we can complete the remainder of the volleyball state series.

The tournaments could resume if circumstances would allow the 7th and 8th grade state volleyball series to be held in some format, but this is not guaranteed at either grade level. One of the factors we have to consider is that schools are currently notifying us that their districts are cancelling all extracurricular activities for an extended period of time. Most importantly, the health and safety for our student-athletes, team personnel and spectators are our priority.

This type of developing situation will no doubt leave our athletes, member schools, and families with many questions. This is indeed unprecedented not only for IESA but for many other organizations across the country faced with the difficult challenge of conducting events. We appreciate your patience and apologize for the inconvenience. Members schools will be notified when additional information is available.

MUSIC— Contests will be conducted at the discretion of the host schools. Host schools need to be in contact with their school administration, local health department, and participating schools. If there are schools who choose not to attend their local contest, please notify Nicole Schaefbauer. If the host school chooses to reschedule the date of the contest, please notify Mrs. Schaefbauer and she will update the contest information on the IESA website.

This type of developing situation will no doubt leave our athletes/performers, member schools, and families with many questions. This is indeed unprecedented not only for IESA but for many other organizations across the country faced with the difficult challenge of conducting events. We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience and the disappointment. At the same time, we take seriously our responsibility to help slow the spread of this disease. We appreciate your patience and your diligence as all of us work to keep our school communities safe.
