GALESBURG, Illinois – The novel coronavirus has caused disruption around the world and on the Knox campus, resulting in the cancelation of all spring sports, including baseball, softball, men’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, and outdoor track and field.

“This was the right decision for the safety and well-being of our students and staff considering the rapidly evolving situation. But I am deeply saddened for our all of our spring sport athletes who were looking forward to the season. I am especially sympathetic to our seniors, who will not have the opportunity to experience their final season wearing the purple and gold” said Director of Athletics Daniella Irle. “We are looking forward to May when our student-athletes can reconnect with their teammates, coaches, and professors. This will also allow us the opportunity to celebrate and thank our spring sport seniors in some manner.”

As of this writing, there are no known COVID-19 cases at Knox or in Galesburg, but there are cases across the United States, and their numbers are increasing hourly.

Knox has made the decision to extend spring break through Tuesday, March 31, and begin online classes on Wednesday, April 1. The plan is to resume on-campus classes beginning on Monday, May 4.

“One of the hardest decisions we have had to make concerns the spring athletics season,” said Knox College President Teresa Amott on March 12. “We understand how much each season means to every student-athlete, to your families and to our fans, and are very saddened to make the decision to suspend spring play until further notice. However, it is clear that many sacrifices will need to be made if we are to control transmission of the virus, especially to vulnerable populations like the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.”

The Midwest Conference has suspended all spring competitions for the time being and many other conferences across the country are following suit.
