Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Mar. 2, 2020

Basketball

The Lewistown Lady Indian girls basketball team was vying for a class 1A state championship on Saturday. The Lady Indians took on the Eastland Cougars. Lewistown got off to a great start, leading 19-15 at the end of the first quarter and 36-26 at the half but really struggled shooting the ball in the second half and ended up falling 62-57. After shooting a blistering 52% from the field in the first 16 minutes, the Lady Indians shot 24% in the final two quarters. Lewistown was led in scoring by senior all-stater Anna Heffren’s 22 points. Fellow all-stater Sydney Shaeffer had 16 as well for the Lady Indians, who end the season at (33-2). Their only two losses on the season came to 1A champ Eastland and the eventual class 2A champ, Pleasant Plains. Plains beat Chicago Marshall, and their head coach, Dorothy Gaters, 43-37 in the 2A title game on Saturday night. Gaters, the all-time winningest coach in IHSA basketball history, was trying for her 1,154th victory. Three Rivers Athletic Conference member, Riverdale, was beaten in the class 2A 3rd place game by Carterville 61-38. Riverdale was led by Sidney Garrett’s ten points. Riverdale finishes (28-5).

Junior High

On Saturday, the Monmouth-Roseville junior high wrestling team headed down to Canton, for the 1A Wrestling Regionals. Overall, the Titans turned in a 2nd place team performance. The Titans had 9 wrestlers in the title matches. The Titans had two individual regional champions on the day, Angel Lopez and Jorge Roman. Justice Tshibuyi, Ozzy Carmona, Jekxel Rivera, Gabe Ortiz-Mora, Maveryk Lee, Rogelio Meza and Curtis Blackman finished in 2nd place to advance to sectionals. Josh Velasquez will advance to Sectionals finishing in 3rd place. The Titans ended with 10 sectional qualifiers, 2 individual champs and a 2nd place team finish. Sectionals will be held on Saturday at 9:00 AM at Macomb High School.

Junior high volleyball 7th grade regionals began on Saturday. At the class 3A Monmouth-Roseville junior high regional, the host Titans fell to Knoxville in three sets to end their season. Leading the Titans in service points was Emily Gunn with 15. Brianna Woodard led in kills with 9 and Mia Reynolds added 9 assists. Monmouth-Roseville ended their season with an overall record of (9-9). Also getting victories in Roseville were Mercer County in three sets and Rockridge in two sets. Tonight, top-seed Sherrard takes on Mercer County and Rockridge plays Knoxville. The finals are set for Wednesday night. ICS found out their opponent in the 1A semi-finals as three matches were played at ICS junior high in Monmouth on Saturday. Galva beat Costa in three sets, so the host Trojans will take on the Wildcats tomorrow night at 5:30. Kewanee Visitation will battle Annawan in the second semifinal at 6:30. West Central and United’s 2A regional starts tonight in Lewistown. The Heat play at 5:00 tonight vs. BPC in quarterfinals at Lewistown Junior High. That match will be followed by Lewistown and ROWVA at 6:00 and United vs. Table Grove/VIT at 7:00.
