Monmouth College Sends Three to NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships

Share

Monmouth College will be represented by three men – one a returning All-American – at this weekend’s NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Joe Krall – who earned his first track All-American award a year ago in the weight throw – is the Scots’ lone returning All-American. The senior enters this weekend seeded second in the weight throw after heaving the weight 64’2-1/2″ at the Illinois College Hilltop Invitational on Feb. 21. The mark is four feet behind the top seed and more than a foot farther than the third seed.

Junior Drew Thaxton and senior Stone Darrow are each seeking their first All-American awards with their first trips to the NCAA meet. Only the top eight finishers are awarded All-American status.

Thaxton will compete in two events, punching his ticket in the shot put and weight throw. He moved up the rankings in the shot put Friday, tying the school-record at the UW-Platteville Qualifier with a heave of 56’3-1/4″. The mark is the 10th-best throw in the nation and is less than two feet from No. 1. Thaxton is seeded 17th in the weight throw with a mark of 59’2-3/4″ set at the Midwest Conference Championships in February.

Darrow ran his way to the national meet with a 60-meter time of 6.90 at last month’s conference championship meet. The fastest time of his career is just four one-hundredths off the school record and ranks him 16th heading into the weekend.

All three Fighting Scots will be in action Friday afternoon. Darrow will lead things off competing in the 60-meter prelims at 2:50 p.m. CDT. The finals are set for 2:30 Saturday afternoon. Krall and Thaxton will follow in the weight throw, where they’re set to begin competition at 4:45 CDT. Thaxton will continue his competition on Saturday afternoon when the shot put is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. Central time start.
