Monmouth came out firing to take an early lead in their first NCAA Regional game since 2012 before Wartburg rallied to oust the Scots from the postseason 91-55 in Waverly, Iowa.
The Scots took an early lead 11-7 in the first quarter, but Wartburg came back to pull ahead 18-13 heading into the second quarter. The Knights continued to build on their late first quarter momentum and raced ahead with a 28-2 run in the second 10 minutes. Monmouth trailed at the half 50-24 after hitting just 3-of-15 from 3-point range against the much taller Knights which hit 19-of-29 from the floor including a 3-for-5 effort from 3-point range. Carley Turnbull provided the lone hot Scots’ hand in the first 20 minutes, scoring 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting.
The second half start was more in line with the first quarter as the Scots were outscored by the Knights by just a point in the third period 18-17. Despite playing nearly even with hosts in the second half, the first half deficit proved to be more than Monmouth’s improved shooting could overcome, ending the Scots’ season in the first round of the NCAA Regional. Shayne Smith picked up the scoring in the second half with 12 points to finish with 16 points, when Turnbull was held to just three second half points and finished with a game-high 19 points.
Monmouth finishes the year with a school-record 21 wins after earning their second trip to the NCAA Tournament in eight years. The Scots graduate Turnbull, a three-year starter at shooting guard and four-year starters point guard Yvonne Ornelas and shooting guard Becca Gallis.
