Western Illinois Women’s Golf: Hamilton-Cross Notches Top-10 Finish

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Nicole Hamilton-Cross landed herself in the top-10 and Western Illinois women’s golf improved its opening-round score by 10 strokes on the final day of the Benbow Invitational at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club on Tuesday (March 10). The Leathernecks finished in seventh place with a team score of 632.

“I was pleased with our improvement today,” Director of Golf Lia Biehl Lukkarinen said. “We will keep working on our short game and our mental game as we move into the next few weeks of practicing at home.”

Hamilton-Cross turned in a 74 in the second round to finish the tournament at 153 (+11) tied for sixth place overall. Natalie Hooper fired an 80 to end up with 159 (+17) after two rounds.

Katie Tanner and Abbie Gault each finished play at 161 (+19) and after an 83, Cassidy Jurkaites rounded out the lineup with 164 (+22).

Competing as an individual, Emily Marrs improved her firs-round tally by five strokes with a 78 on day two to turn in a total of 161 (+19). Katy Schmitt (185) completed her first spring tournament of the season.

The Leathernecks are off until March 30-31 when they will compete in the prestigious Pinehurst Intercollegiate.
