Elizabeth Terpening Orterry

Elizabeth M. “Betty” Terpenning Orterry, 99, of Lake Warren-Monmouth, IL, passed away at 4:55 a.m., Sunday, April 26, 2020 at Aperion Care Galesburg North, Galesburg, IL. 

She was born on July 12, 1920 in Mammoth Cave, KY, the daughter of Orba and Mary (Brooks) Esters, the oldest of seven children.  The family moved to Illinois in 1927.  Elizabeth attended Indian Grove School, Gerlaw School, and Monmouth High School. 

Elizabeth married Harlan Terpening on January 18, 1939.  Later after his death, she married Ed Orterry; he preceded her in death.   

Elizabeth put her heart and soul into caring for her family.  She loved serving in her church, enjoyed gardening, making pies, candy, and birthday cakes.  Elizabeth also enjoyed flowers, crafts, and square dancing.  She enjoyed wintering in Texas with Ed.  She was a charter member of the Christian Women’s Group and belonged to the Warren County Home Extension for years.  She and Harlan sang duets together in the area.  In 1937 she sang with her guitar at the WLS Barn Dance gathering in Galesburg, IL.  Harlan was also there singing in a trio with his brothers; that’s where they met!  The family has a great appreciation for music.      

Surviving Elizabeth are two daughters, Debra (Jim) Darrah of Little York, IL, Sandra Morrison of Lena, IL; six grandchildren, Shelli (Marc) Hanson, Sherri (Scott) Walters, Steve (Kim) Darrah, Mark (Michele) Morrison, Matt (Laura) Morrison, Jeff Morrison; six great grandchildren, Landon (Rachel) Walters, Evan Walters, Brooke (Adam) Robinson, Rachel (Spencer) Harris, Micah Morrison, Marly Morrison, Bennet Morrison; and two great great grandchildren, Oliver Walters and Ezra Walters.  Also surviving is her sister, Evelyn Shaver of Salinas, CA; three brothers, Chester (Alice) Esters of Alpha, IL, Simeon (Charlene) Esters of Morgan Hill, CA, Jim (Jeanne) Esters of Galesburg, IL, and a number of nieces and nephews.   

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Nova and brother in law, Orville Goedeke; her brother, Bill and sister-in-law, Frances Esters; infant brother, Orba Laverne Esters; brother-in-law, Donald Shaver, and son-in-law, David Morrison.    

Cremation rites have been accorded.  A Private Family Graveside Services will be at Warren County Memorial Park, Monmouth, IL.  Memorials can be made to the Gerlaw Christian Church.  McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth, IL, is in charge of the arrangements.  For more information or to leave an online condolence please visit, www.mcguireanddaviesfuneralhome.com.
