Local school districts, IHSA members across Illinois, and schools nationwide have jumped on the trend of #LightsfortheFight during this COVID-19 quarantine. Monmouth-Roseville High School Principal Jeff Ewing says it is a way to unite and show support:
“It basically shows support for the seniors. Well, first and foremost the seniors just because it is such a different year for them and we have to do some special things for these kids because it is not fair to them. I don’t know what else to do. This is just something I thought we could jump on board with and do it. We also want to honor our essential workers that are on the frontlines doing stuff. Then just the students that are not in school right now. They are home and some are struggling with this e-learning and some are getting it, you know, they just want to be around their friends. The staff is really, really missing them, so it is just one of those ways we can kind of make a connection with them,” Ewing shares.
Members of the Monmouth-Roseville staff will be at the high school football field along Sunny Lane and at the Junior High tonight waving to students and community members as they drive by.
The United School District, Abingdon-Avon, and West Central will be participating at their respective schools as well.
The schools are turning on the lights from 8 to 8:20 pm Friday nights to show their support for the community and nationwide.
