Cubs manager David Ross is going with Kyle Hendricks as the Opening Day starter later this month. The right-hander will take the mound on July 24th against the Brewers at Wrigley Field, with Yu Darvish starting the season’s second game. Jon Lester had been the Cubs’ Opening Day starter in four of the last five years. Hendrick performed well on the mound during an intrasquad game on Tuesday at Wrigley, tossing six and a third shutout innings with three strikeouts, no walks and one hit allowed. The Cubs open their shortened 60-game 2020 regular season Friday, July 24th at home against the Milwaukee Brewers. You can hear it on your home for Chicago Cub baseball, AM 1330/FM 94.1 WRAM with the pregame show starting at 5:35.
Another Cubs pitcher, José Quintana, is on the road to recovery following thumb surgery earlier this month. The lefty played catch yesterday at Wrigley Field after having stitches removed from his left thumb the day before. Quintana suffered a laceration on the thumb while washing dishes at home in Miami and had surgery on July 2nd.
