The Galesburg Downtown Council announced the completion of their Spring 2020 Cleanup Downtown Day Initiative on July 11, 2020.  The Project included 48 volunteers and 14 businesses in downtown Galesburg, who canvassed the Special Service Area to pick up trash, broken bottles, plastic cups, beer/pop cans, cigarette butts and other waste. The focus was going from South to North on Tompkins Street to Ferris Street to include Main Street and East to West from the Square to Chamber Street. The group worked the sidewalks, streets, every parking lot and several back alleyways. The total cleanup used 45 trash bags and filled a dumpster.

Joe Mangieri, Jr., Board Member of the Galesburg Downtown Council led the project and stated that we have a great start to a cleaner downtown for 2020. “Most importantly, we continue to increase the awareness that it is the Downtown Community’s responsibility to keep our area clean. We want to build pride in our downtown for the entire community.” The cleaner our streets, parking lots and sidewalks, the more successful our businesses will be.

Phil Dickinson, President of the Downtown Council, echoed Mr. Mangieri’s comments. “Additionally, we know this project will remind the community to keep Downtown Clean.” Mangieri and Dickenson wanted to offer a special thank you to Hy-Vee Supermarket on East Main Street for providing refreshments and baked goods for the volunteers.

The volunteers were from F & M Bank, Altrusa, Girl Scout Troops 2755-5202 and Boy Scout 316-317, Pilot Club,

Orion Renewable Energy, Office Specialist, La Michoacanita Restaurant, Koreana Restaurant, Craft Restaurant, Iron Spike Restaurant, Landmark Cafe, Mangieri Electric, Bondi Building, Board Members/Staff of the Galesburg Downtown Council and many friends to the downtown.
