In sad news over the weekend, Kewanee High School boys basketball coach, Shaune Lewis has died at the age of 47. In 2015, Lewis returned to coach at the school at which he graduated from in 1991. In five seasons as head coach of the Boilermakers, Lewis won 93 games, including two regional championship plaques. This past winter, the Boilermakers went (27-5), claiming a Three Rivers Conference East Division title in the process. The season ended with a loss to Princeton in the Class 2A IVC regional semi-finals.
Lewis passed away doing is second favorite activity, racing cars on local dirt tracks. According to the Kewanee Star Courier, Lewis suffered a medical episode on the pace lap of a preliminary heat race at Davenport Speedway on Thursday, July 2nd. He received treatment at the track and was taken to Genesis Medical Center in Davenport, where he died. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. Lewis, well known for his enthusiasm and passion for basketball, is survived by his wife, Rhonda, and his son, Blaise. Blaise will be a freshman this upcoming school year at Kewanee High School. There will be a Private Celebration of Life, with visitation from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, Saturday, July 11 at the Kewanee High School Auditorium. Face masks are recommended and social distancing should be observed.
