Remote Learning and Increased Screen Time Leading to Tired Eyes

Share

As schools are turning to remote learning during this pandemic and more are working from home, eye strain and tired eyes are being seen due to the amount of screen time. Dr. Ally Braet, Optometrist at Kehoe Eye Care, states it is very important to take breaks:

“Holding electronic devices so close to our face put a large strain on our eyes and it is really important to take breaks often while using electronic devices. A quick and easy rule I like to tell people is the 20-20-20 rule. For every twenty minutes of being on electronics, look twenty feet away for about twenty seconds. That relaxes the eyes and resets our focusing system and can give people a lot of relief when experiencing eye strain,” Dr. Braet says.

To help relax the eyes while using a screen, a blue light lens can be used to filter light and protect the eyes from cataracts and macular degeneration in the future.

Dr. Braet recommends scheduling a routine eye exam yearly, starting at kindergarten aged kids.
