The recent strong wind events has caused some corn to flatten in the area, says Bayer Crop Science Learning Center Manager Troy Coziahr in the latest crop update:
“For the most part it is just root lodging. Not a lot of green snap out there, although there is some of that in pockets. By and large, the corn that went down, a lot of it was the stuff that was replanted, so it was planted a little bit later and didn’t quite have the root system established yet and so some of that got laid over. Most of it is going to stand back up and I think is going to be fine,” Coziahr states.
As far as pollination, Coziahr reports the concern is the upcoming heat, especially as spotty as the rain has been in the area.
Very little disease pressure is being seen out in the fields, but with heat indexes into the triple digits in the forecast and the unknown amount of moisture, Coziahr, reports that could change:
“If we start seeing some more moisture along with this heat, dew in the mornings, grey leaf spot in particular could be an issue. In soybeans, white mold I don’t think in all this heat will be a problem. We have soybeans flowering right now, I think that is going to take care of any white mold concerns that anybody might have had for some of those early planted soybeans. That is my guess anyway. Heat generally kills that infection. We really are not seeing much disease pressure out there, but this extra moisture along with that heat could start turning up the pressure,” Coziahr shares.
Over the next couple of weeks, Coziahr states more planes will be in the area applying fungicides.
Business critical events are the only visitors to Bayer Crop Science Learning Center in Monmouth. Coziahr shares they have resorted to virtual events throughout the pandemic:
“Right now we are pretty much doing everything virtually. We have a lot of nice videos up there and some stuff we have done in the past is still out there and available and still very informative. We have a nice video on Japanese beetle. We have some new videos on corn growth and development and potassium. We were seeing some potassium deficiencies there before we started getting the rains. So a lot of good stuff on our YouTube channels,” says Coziahr.
