Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Aug 19, 2020

Golf

The Monmouth-Roseville boys golf team had their first official competition of the 2020 season last night. The Titans hosted Western Big Six Conference members, Galesburg and Alleman at Gibson Woods Golf Course. Galesburg took first with an 18 hole team score of 343, followed by Alleman’s 348 and Monmouth-Roseville’s 397. Galesburg is head coached by former United Red Storm boys basketball coach Jim Noonan, while Monmouth-Roseville is being headed up this season for the first time by Jake Sottos, who also serves as the Monmouth-Roseville boys basketball junior varsity head coach. Galesburg sophomore Jason Rumbom was the meet medalsist with a solid 72. Monmouth-Roseville was led by Noah Clark’s 95 and Jimmy Connell’s 96. DJ Reading and John Juszczyk also contributed to the team scoring for the Titans with a 100 and a 106, respectively.

The United Red Storm boys are (2-0) on the season after beating Mid County 175-190 at Oak Run Golf Course. United had three golfers tie for meet medalist honors with a trio of 43’s. Drew Brown, Caleb Copeland and Parker Cassidy shot that score and were joined by Ian McVey’s 46 to round out the scoring. Mid County was led by Kaden Waller’s 43 and Jaxson Willer’s 46.

On the girls side, the Red Storm girls golf team also got a win over the Cougars to improve to (2-0) on the season. United shot a team score of 196, which was 42 shots better than Mid County’s 238. For United, Paige McKeown led all golfers for the day, carding a 9-hole score of 40. Also scoring for United was Haley Marshall with a 50, Becca Merry with a 52 and Addy Trego with a 54.

The Knoxville boys lost to Sherrard 152-198 at Fyre Lake Golf Club. Evan Earl was the meet medalist for Sherrard with a 34. Titus Cramer and David Hise led Knoxville with a pair of 44’s.

The Macomb Bomber girls golf team beat Normal Community 173-183 at Ironwood Golf Course in Normal. Laine Torrance shot a 41 for Macomb for her second meet medalist honor of the season. She was joined by solid scores of 42 by Lily Vardaman, a 44 by Ellen Meixner and a 46 from Trinity Christensen.

Junior High

In junior high baseball, ICS got a walk-off, 8-7 win over Abingdon-Avon in the Trojans’ season opener at the Field of Dreams in Monmouth. Leading 7-5 going into the top of the 7th, A-Town scored a pair of runs to tie the game at 7-all. In the bottom of the 7th, a one-out, bases-loaded wild pitch scored Nick Huston with the winning run. Alex Simmons had two of ICS’s seven hits for the game. Andrew Way had a pair of rbis for the Trojans as well. ICS coaxed 13 walks from Abingdon-Avon pitching in the game. Clay Casteel got the pitching win for ICS, going the final four innings, striking out eight batters.
