Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Aug 27, 2020

Golf

The Monmouth-Roseville boys golf team earned their first win of the season over Knoxville at Oak Run Golf Course yesterday. The Titans beat the Blue Bullets by six strokes 168-174. Monmouth-Roseville was led by meet medalist Noah Clark’s 39. Jimmy Connell carded a 41 and was joined by DJ Reading and Jack Thompson’s 44’s to figure in the Titan team scoring total. Knoxville’s Titus Cramer’s 42 led the Blue Bullets. David Hise was right behind Cramer with a 43. Justin Betz scored a 44 and Tanner Maulden had a 45 to round out the Knoxville scoring.

The United Red Storm boys golf team beat Annawan/Wethersfield 188-200 at Kewanee Dunes. For United, Drew Brown was the meet medalist with 39. Rounding out top 4 scorers for the Red Storm was Caleb Copeland with a 46, Kittner McVey with a 49 and Nolan Leffler with a 54. The United girls golfers beat both Annawan/Wethersfield and Bureau Valley to complete the sweep for Red Storm golf. Paige McKeown was the medalist with a 49 for United.

The Macomb High School boys golf team placed first out of four teams at Weaver Ridge Golf Course in Peoria. Braeden Duncan led Macomb with a 73. Connor Hamm was also in the 70’s for Macomb with a 77. The Bombers shot a team score of 310. That was one shot better than Bloomington, 17 shots better than Normal Community and 48 shots better than Normal West High School.

The Macomb Bomber girls golfers went (2-0) at Westview Golf Course in Quincy. The Bomber’s team total of 165, beat Quincy Notre Dame’s 171 and Rock Island’s 285. Macomb’s Laine Torrance won yet another meet medalist honor with a 38. Lily Vardaman shot a 39, her season-low, for Macomb, as well. The Macomb girls are (5-1).

A talented Ridgewood Spartan boys golf team defeated Orion 169-203 at Oakwood Country Club. Tom Bumann and Ganon Greenman were both under 40 for Ridgewood. Bumann’s 38 led all golfers, while Greenman was right behind with a 39.

Cross Country

The United Red Storm cross country team opened their season with a 3-team meet at Galva Park, including Mid County and Mercer County. The Red Storm boys were led by Zair Velazquez’s 2nd place run. United’s Hunter Hall was a top-5 finisher with a 4th place. Mercer County’s Derek Coulter was the individual winner. The Red Storm girls placed 2nd out of the three schools. The Red Storm were led by Bridget Brokaw’s 2nd place run. Makaela Robinson was 7th for United. Mercer County won the meet and were paced by girls division winner, Eden Mueller.

The Macomb Bomber cross country teams hosted a 4-school meet at Spring Lake. The Bomber boys placed 2nd with Stan Melkumian getting a 2nd place finish. Ben LaPrad was 5th and Noah LaPrad was 8th for Macomb. BPC’s Devin Suggitt was 13th. The Macomb girls won their meet. Olivia Bishop, Khyleigh Diggs and Sylvia Barcley placed 1st, 3rd and 4th, respectively. Quinn Kurasz was in the top-10, crossing the finish line in 6th for the Lady Bombers. Emilee Hickenbottom from BPC was 19th to lead the Spartans.

Swimming and Diving

The Macomb girls swim team was edged out by Galesburg 88-82. Individual winners for Macomb were Lauren Carson in the 50 yard freestyle. Macomb also won the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Tennis

The Macomb girls tennis team garnered an 8-1 win over Peoria Christian. Getting singles wins for Macomb was Madeline MacGregor, Tali Stone, Kiley Daniels, Sanjana Babu and Kathleen LaPrad. Getting doubles wins for the Lady Bombers was MacGregor and Stone at #1 doubles, Anne Vana and Daniels at #2 doubles and Babu and Kathleen LaPrad at #3 doubles.

Junior High

The ICS Trojan junior high cross country program had their first meet in program history last night at Farmington. The Trojans swept the boys and girls individual titles. David Simmons, Alex Simmons and Marc Simmons went 1-2-3 on the boy’s side. For the Trojan girls, Hayden Johnson was first and Lilly Mahoney was 2nd.
