Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for August 18th, 2020

Golf

The United Red Storm boys golf team hit the course for the first time this season last night. The Storm hosted Princeville at Gibson Woods. United shoots a solid score of 169, getting a 43 stroke win over the Princes. United’s Drew Brown was the meet medalist with a 2-over par 37. He was joined in the scoring by Caleb Copeland, Kittner McVey and Parker Cassidy, who all carded 44’s. Reed Yung shot a 48 to lead Princeville. Congratulations to new Red Storm boys golf coach Jeff Neal on his first career win.

The United Red Storm girls golf team also began their season last night with a home match against Princeville. Like Jeff Neal, new girls coach Dave Marshall got his first career win, as well. The United lady-linksters shot a team score of 229. Princeville carded a score of 268. Marshall has been an assistant to former coach Madeline Wood for the past six years. The Red Storm were led by a pair of seniors in Paige McKeown and Haley Marshall. McKeown had a meet medalist score of 46, followed by Marshall’s 50. Also in the scoring column for United was junior Josie McElwee with a 66 and senior Becca Merry with a 67.

The Macomb Bomber boys golf team won its second tournament in as many days yesterday. The Bombers won a scorecard tiebreaker over East Peoria to claim the Redbird Classic at Illinois State University. Macomb shot a team score of 304. They were led by Braeden Duncan’s even-par 71 and Connor Hamm’s 1-over 72. Jack Lockard was 7th overall with a 77 and Connor Watson was in the top-20 with a score of 84 for 18th. The tiebreaker was decided by Glenn Sutton’s score of 86, which was one shot better than East Peoria’s #5 scorer’s 87.

The Mercer County boys golf team was edged out by Orion 190-196 at Oakwood Country Club. Gage Lager led Mer Co with a 44. Robby Holtschlag was also under 50 for the Golden Eagles, shooting a 49.

Mercer County’s girls golf team earned the Golden Eagle golf program a split on the night, beating Orion 227-253. Callie Siering was the low scorer for the dual match with a 50. She was joined by Golden Eagle teammate Kristina Snowdon’s 53 for the top two Mercer County golfers.

Junior High

In junior high baseball, United shuts out Galva 12-0 behind Elliott Copeland’s no-hitter. Copeland went four innings, recording ten strikeouts. Offensively, the Red Storm pound out 13 hits with five different batters getting two hits each. Tanner Rogers had a 2-run inside-the-park home run during a 7-run second inning for United, who moves to (2-0) on the season.
