Wendell L. French, PhD, 52, of Macomb, Illinois (originally from Galesburg) ended his life’s journey at 1:14 am Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb. He was born September 29, 1967 in Conway, Arkansas the son of Leotis and Marvel Lois Stanley French.

Wendell is survived by his loving mother Marvel “Lois” French of Macomb and a host of many aunts, uncles, special cousins and nieces and nephews, that he remained extremely close with.  ‘Big Wen” as he was known to many, lit up a room with his smile, and had an undeniable spirit of positivity, hope, and love of family. He was a sports enthusiast, loved listening to music, and was known as an excellent host and cook. Wendell had professed his hope in Christ at a very early age and had an unrelenting faith in God. Wendell attended the Shepherds Gate Church in Macomb.

Dr. French graduated from Galesburg High School in 1986 and Western Illinois University with his bachelor’s degree in Biology in 1990. During his college years at Western, his focus on academics and achievement led to his induction in several honor societies as well as receiving national recognition by the Outstanding College Students of America. He was a dedicated scholar and researcher, and earned his PhD from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2001. His continued research pursuits later afforded him the opportunity to live and work in New York City in 2002 and 2003, before eventually returning to settle down in Illinois. He went on to teach microbiology at Western Illinois University for eight years where he enjoyed mentorship to students and coordinating a laboratory. He was currently working for NTN Bower Corporation in Macomb.

Graveside services are scheduled for Noon, Saturday September 5, 2020 at East Linwood Cemetery with Pastor Doug Kuster and Elder Jerel Jones officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00am-Noon Saturday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
