DEER GROVE — The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team improved its score by six shots in the final round of the Sauk Valley Invite on Thursday at Deer Valley, finishing fourth in its first tournament of the season.
Sophomore Grant Otting (Taylor Ridge, Ill./Rockridge) led the Chargers for the second consecutive day, matching the 8-over-par 80 he posted in the first round. Otting’s 160 total put him in a three-way tie for seventh.
Sandburg shot 327 as a team for a 660 total over 36 holes. The Chargers finished two shots back of third-place Illinois Valley, which posted a 318 on Thursday, and six shots behind runner-up Bryant & Stratton. Black Hawk shot 303 on Thursday and won the tournament with a 619 total.
Freshman Cole Hopping (Vermont, Ill./VIT) carded a second-round 81, and his 164 total left him one stroke away from a top-10 finish. Sophomore Trace White (Mount Pleasant, Iowa/Mount Pleasant) posted an 82 to finish at 167 for the tournament. Grant Campbell (Earlville, Ill./Earlville) added an 84 for Sandburg’s final score. Campbell had a 36-hole total of 169.
Black Hawk’s Gabe Beardsley finished 6 over (150) for the tournament to take medalist honors by one shot over Kishwaukee’s Thomas O’Connor.
