Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 15, 2020

Golf

The United Red Storm boys golf team beat Monmouth-Roseville and Knoxville in a very competetive meet at Gibson Woods Golf Course. The Red Storm and Knoxville tied at 182, with Monmouth-Roseville just behind at 184. The Red Storm were declared the winner over Knoxville via a 5th-man tie breaker. Knoxville had the low individual scorer for the day, with David Hise shooting a 42. Titus Cramer was also in the 40’s for Knoxville with a 44. United had five golfers in the 40’s with Drew Brown leading the way with a 43. Kittner McVey carded a 45 as well for the Red Storm. Monmouth-Roseville’s John Juszczyk was the low Titan with a 44. Noah Clark shot a 45 for the Titans, as well.

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys defeated Mercer County and Annawan-Wethersfield at The Dunes in Kewanee. Galesburg shot a team score of 172, led meet medalist Jason Runbom with a 40. Ben Templeton also shot a nice score of 41 for Galesburg.

Cross Country

Monmouth-Roseville hosted Knoxville, Sherrard and BPC for a 4-team cross country meet at Monmouth Park. On the boy’s side Sherrard beat Monmouth-Roseville 18-45. Neither Knoxville nor BPC had enough to compete for the team championship. Monmouth-Roseville’s Rafael Tomas Francisco finished 3rd to lead the host Titans. Knoxville’s Dawson Hensley was 4th and BPC’s Devin Suggitt was 6th. Sherrard’s Jacob Belha won the individual title. All four schools had enough girls to compete for the best team at the meet. Knoxville was 1st with a score of 16. Sherrard was 2nd with 60 points and Monmouth-Roseville was 3rd with 63. Knoxville had 7 of the top 8 times, individually. Bryn Bahnks was 1st and Mackenzie Rader was 2nd for the Blue Bullets. Monmouth-Roseville’s top placer was Dayanna Mora-Ortiz was 9th, with Rileigh Ewing 11th. BPC’s top finisher was Emily Hickenbottom in 21st.

The Galesburg High School girls cross country teams ran at Empire Park in Hampton, Il against the host United Township Panthers. The Panthers narrowly defeated Galesburg 24-31. Sophomore Briana Admire placed 2nd overall for Galesburg. Amanda Wilson was 5th and Kaylee Allen was 6th for the Silver Streaks, as well.

Swimming and Diving

On a busy day for Monmouth-Roseville High School sports, the Titan girls swimmers were at Galesburg for a dual meet against the Silver Streaks. The Lady Titans fall to the Streaks 101-67. Monmouth-Roseville’s Cally Tate had the best time in four events, including the 50 and 100 yard backstroke races and the 100 and 200 freestyle events. Addie Smith won two events, the 50 yard breaststroke and 200 IM. Getting one win apiece was Abby Sikorski in the 50 yard butterfly and Caitlyn Stewart in the 100 breaststroke. Galesburg’s Kyle Tapper won two events also, the 100 yard butterfly and 50 freestyle. Allie Warren touched the wall first in the 500 freestyle race.

Tennis

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls tennis team knocked off Peoria Christian at Art Fish Courts on the GHS campus. Getting singles wins for Galesburg was Gwendolyn Allison, Camryn Anderson, Bre McClain and Kaidence Wilson. Juniper and Camellia Schwartzman teamed up for a doubles victory for the Lady Streaks, as did Wilson and Sariah Simmons.

Junior High

The United Red Storm baseball team is (9-1) after beating 19-1. Ian Leffler was 2-for-3 with a pair doubles and two rbis for United. Eilliott Copeland was 2-for-3 and Zeke Clark had three rbis for United as well.

The ICS Trojan baseball squad fall to LaHarpe 10-4 in LaHarpe. Nick Huston and Elijah Noel each had two hits to lead ICS offensively.

The West Central baseball team beat A-Town 8-3 in Stronghurst. Ethan Nichols and Ayden Reed had two hits apiece for West Central. Nichols got the pitching win, going five innings, giving up only one hit, with seven strikeouts.
