Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 17, 2020

Tennis

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls tennis team lost to Quincy 7-2. The Streaks picked up a couple of doubles wins. Camryn Anderson and Gwendolyn Allison won at #1 doubles and Kaidence Wilson and Sariah Simmons was victorious at #3 doubles.

Cross Country

The Galesburg boys and girls cross country teams hosted Alleman at Lake Storey Park in Galesburg. Alleman swept both the boys and girls team titles. The Streak boys lost 25-30. Ben Vasquez was 3rd and Plamedi Nseka was 4th for Galesburg. The Silver Streak girls lost to the Pioneers 16-43. Briana Admire got a top-5 placement for Galesburg, crossing the finish line in 5th.

The Mercer County Golden Eagle boys and girls cross country traveled to Princeville for a Lincoln Trail Conference dual meet. The schools split the day, with the Mer Co boys losing to the Princes, 26-33, and the Golden Eagle girls winning 24-35. Mercer County’s Eden Miller won the girl’s race and her school mate Derek Coulter won the boy’s side.

Junior High

Plenty of junior high sports last night. It was 8th grade recognition night for the United Red Storm baseball team. After honoring the 12 8th graders, United earned a 4-2 win over the ICS Trojans. The Red Storm scored four runs in the bottom of the 3rd and then hung on for their 10th victory against one loss. United got on the board first with a 2-run double by Tanner Rogers. Rogers’ double scored Elliott Copeland and Aiden Martin. Later in the inning, an rbi single by Sully Wiles scored Rogers with the fourth run. ICS came right back in the top of the 4th for their only two runs. An error by United led to both runs scoring for the Trojans. Rogers and Ian Leffler had two hits apiece for United. Each also smashed a double in the game. Max Ferguson had two hits for ICS. Leffler, Rogers and Copeland all combined for the pitching win for United. Rogers gets the official win, going three innings, giving up two hits and gets eight strikeouts. ICS falls to (3-4) on the season.

It was also eighth grade recognition night for the West Central softball team. The Heat lose to Mercer County 12-7 in Stronghurst. Mercer County broke open a 3-3 tie with four runs in the top of the 4th. Getting multiple hits for West Central was Addison Seitz and Lauren Winters with four each. Ashley Meyer had three safeties and Rebecca Hinshaw garnered two hits. Winter had a triple, two doubles and three rbis. West Central is (2-2) for the year.
