Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 2, 2020

Golf

The United Red Storm boys golf team beat Mercer County 175-181 on the Golden Eagle’s home course at Hawthorn Ridge yesterday. The Red Storm are still unbeaten on the season at (7-0). United’s Drew Brown and Parker Cassidy tied for meet medalist honors with 40’s. Ian McVey’s 45 and Caleb Copeland’s 50 rounded out the scoring for the Red Storm.
The Macomb Bomber boys golf team beat Monmouth-Roseville 159-190 at the Macomb Country Club. Braeden Duncan, Jack Lockard and Connor Hamm all shot 39’s to tie for the best of the meet. Connor Watson shot a 40 as well for Macomb. Monmouth-Roseville was led by John Juszczyk’s 41. Noah Clark shot a 47 and DJ Reading and Jack Thompson shot a pair of 51 as well for the Titans.

The United Red Storm girls golf team participated in a quadrangular meet at Maple Lane Country Club in Elmwood vs. Galva, Princeville and Elmwood. The Red Storm went (1-2), beating Princeville. Haley Marshall led United with a 48. Addy Trego shot a 53 and was followed by Becca Merry’s 54 and Josie McElwee’s 62.

The Macomb Bomber girls golfers took part in a 4-team meet Deer Run in Hamilton. Macomb was the only team that scored under 200, with a total of 186 strokes. Lily Vardaman was the meet medalist with a 44. Ellen Meixner shot a 45, Laine Torrance shot a 46 and Trinity Christensen carded a 51 to round out the scoring for the Lady Bombers. With the three wins, Macomb is now (8-2) overall.

Cross Country

The United High School boys and girls cross country teams went to Princeville for a 3-team meet against the home course Princes and Stark County. United’s Bridget Brokaw won the girl’s side, individually. Team-wise, the Princes edged out the Red Storm 26-31. Mikaela Robinson and Luci Kane also finished in the top-10 for United, with 7th and 8th place finishes, repectively. For the Red Storm boys, Zair Velazquez placed 7th to lead United. Neither United, nor Stark County, had enough boys to compete for the team win.

Tennis

The Macomb Bomber girls tennis team lost to Quincy Notre Dame 6-3 in a makeup meet from Tuesday night. Getting singles wins for Macomb was Tali Stone, Kiley Daniels and Sanjana Babu.

Junior High

In junior high baseball, United made up their home game against West Central last night in Alexis. United is (6-0) after a 12-0, mercy-rule victory over the Heat. United garnered nine hits and nine walks off West Central pitching to get the win. United broke open a 3-0 game with nine runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Tanner Rogers had a pair of hits and a double for the Red Storm. He was also the winning pitcher, going all four innings, giving up two hits and no runs. Rogers struck out seven batters and only allowed two walks. Kyle Lafary and Ethan Nichols had the lone hits for West Central.
