Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 23, 2020

Golf

The United Red Storm boys and girls golf teams hosted Mid County at Gibson Woods Golf Course on Wednesday. The Red Storm boys beat the Cougars 169-204. Drew Brown led the way for United with a 38. That score was low enough for Drew to earn meet medalist honors. Also scoring for United was Parker Cassidy and Kittner McVey with 43’s. Caleb Copeland rounded out the scoring with a 45. The Red Storm girls were also victorious over Mid County by a score of 195-241. Paige McKeown’s personal best score of 38 led everyone on the girl’s side. Addy Trego shot a 49, Haley Marshal carded a 51 and Josie McElwee shot a 58 for the four Red Storm scorers.

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys golfers shot their best team score of the season so far, but went (0-2) vs. Rockridge and Sherrard at Highland Springs Golf Course. Sherrard’s team score of 153 topped Rockridge’s 161 and Monmouth-Roseville’s 178. Sherrard’s Evan Earl was the meet medalist with a 33. The Titan’s four scoring golfers included Jon Jusczcyk and Jack Thompson’s 43’s, DJ Reading’s 45. Noah Clark and Levi Birditt tied with 47’s for the 4th spot.

The Macomb Bomber girls golf team beat Farmington 165-241 at Golf Hills Golf Club in Colchester. The Bomber’s Lily Vardaman was the meet medalist with a career-low 37. Laine Torrance shot a 38 and was joined by Trinity Christensen’s 44 and Ellen Meixner’s 46 to round out the scoring for Macomb, who are now (16-2) overall on the season.

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys golf team defeated fellow Western Big Six Conference foe Sterling 169-173. Jason Runbom led the Streaks with a 9-hole score of 37. Carson Hopping contributed a 42 to the team score. John Crowl posted a 44 and Ben Templeton was also in the scoring quartet with a 46.

Cross Country

The United boys and girls cross country teams traveled to Hawthorne Ridge Gold Course in Aledo for a dual meet against the Mercer County Golden Eagles. The hosts won the girls meet 19-41 but United’s Bridget Brokaw placed 2nd and Mikaela Robinson was 7th. Eden Mueller from Mercer County was the winner. The United Red Storm boys do not have enough runners to compete as a team but did get a 4th place finish from Hunter Hall and a 6th place from Ben McVey.
