Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 24, 2020

Golf

The United Red Storm girls golf team beat Sherrard 206-231 yesterday at Fyre Lake Golf Club. Haley Marshall was the meet medalist for United with a 47. Paige McKeown was also under 50 with a 49. Addy Trego carded a 53 and Becca Merry and Josie McElwee shot 57’s for the United scoring.
The Knoxville Blue Bullet girls golf team went (0-3) vs. Mid County, Farmington and Princeville at Bunker Links. Farmington garnered the best score of the day with a 237. Knoxville’s Kaci Luptak led all golfers on the day with a 47. The Knoxville boys golf team took on Ridgewood and Farmington at Bunker Links as well. The Blue Bullets fell to Ridgewood 158-186. Farmington did not have enough golfers to compete in the team scores. Thomas Bumann for Ridgewood was the meet medalist with a 35. Titus Cramer led Knoxville with a 42. David Hise had a 46 for the Blue Bullets, as well.

The Macomb Bomber boys golf team was at the Macomb Country Club against another solid high school golf program. The Bombers took on the Quincy Notre Dame Raiders. The Bombers beat the Raiders 159-168. QND’s Alex McCulla shot a 36 for meet medalist honors. Connor Hamm led Macomb with a 38. Glenn Sutton carded a 39 for Macomb to go under 40. The Bomber girls golfers were also in action against Illini Bluffs at Coyote Creek Golf Course. The Lady Bombers were also victorious, defeating the Tigers 182-207. Laine Torrance was the meet medalist for Macomb, carding a 40.

Cross Country

The Monmouth-Roseville, Ridgewood and Mid County boys and girls cross country teams all took part in a triangular meet at Valley View in Cambridge. Monmouth-Roseville won the boy’s team competition and took second to Ridgewood on the girl’s side. Monmouth-Roseville’s Rafael Tomas Francisco, Joe Rivera and Jekxel Rivera placed 3th-5th, respectively in the boy’s race. Ridgewood’s Nick Janson and Femando Avial-Rubio was 1st and 2nd for Ridgewood. The Monmouth-Roseville Titan girls were led by Dayanna Ortiz Mora in 3rd and Rileigh Ewing in 7th place. Ridgewood also had the 1st and 2nd place finishers in the girl’s event, as Kendra Downing was 1st and Miranda Reed was 2nd.

Tennis

The Galesburg girls tennis team beat Kewanee 4-1. Benie Mbanani got a singles win for Galesburg. The Streaks won all three doubles matchups.

The Macomb Bomber girls tennis team shutout Kewanee 5-0. Madeline MacGregor and Tali Stone won singles matches as Macomb swept the three doubles contests.

Junior High

The West Central Heat junior high softball team will play for a regional championship on Saturday after the Lady Heat beat Payson-Seymour 10-2. After a six-run 2nd inning, West Central led the game 8-0. Delaney Endress had a great day at the plate for the Heat. Endress went 3-for-3, smashing two doubles and driving in three runs. Addison Seitz went 2-for-4 with a triple and two rbis. Seitz also got the pitching win, going all seven innings, giving up five hits, one earned run and recording 17 strikeouts. West Central will take on Southeastern in Stronghurst on Saturday for the regional championship. The time has not been announced as yet.

The Mercer County junior high softball team moved to (7-3) on the season after upsetting top-seed Dunlap 12-6. Mercer County will take on Princeton for the regional championship on Saturday at 10:30 at Malden Grade School.

The ICS Trojan girls cross country team hosted Abingdon-Avon and BPC at the Field of Dreams in Monmouth. The Trojans win the team side and got top-5 individual finishes from Hayden Johnson in 3rd, Lilly Mahoney in 4th and Clara Box in 5th.
